I think alot of people are going into nursing these days because of the economy and the stories drilled in peoples heads about how nurses make alot of money for only a 2 yr degree. I can tell this by listening to students in my pre-req classes. Some whom I talk to don't have the slightest clue about nursing but they can spout off how much money they think they'll make when they first start out. I'm sure some of you on here will agree with me. I was talking to this one student and he told me, "Yeah, I'm going into nursing. I was a mechanical engineer and was laid off. I can't find work in that right now. Nursing is only two years. I made good money on my last job."
I do agree with u that people can be motived by money. People can pretty much be motivated by anything ...(everyone is different.) I dont look down on people that become nurses for the money nor do I look down on the nurses that do it for pure compassion. Im only saying, that people judge others WAYYY to much. People spend way to much time being bitter and angry. I have seen Nurses (VERY GOOD NURSES) that do it for the money, and I have seen Nurses (VERY GOOD NURSES) do it because they have PURE COMPASSION/EMPATHY. For example, my mother has been diagnosed with Colon Cancer and seeks treatment at the Harold Leever Center. (VERY GOOD FACILITY). A Nurse (A Very YOUNG NURSE) treats my mother with THE MOST COMPASSION, not because its just her job. She once was where my mother is. She too, was a Cancer Patient and NOW she is a CANCER SURVIVOR .....Spreading HOPE and positivity to patients battling with CANCER. She was motivated to become an oncology nurse , because of her significant experience with cancer. Thats truely INSPIRATIONAL !!!!!
I have also seen other nurses treat my mother with compassion, regardless of what they went to nursing school for, they still provide excellent care to my mother. The bottom line is that WE NURSES need to realize that LIFE can be taken from us at any point, and that its much too short. Spending time judging one another is a waste of time, whats important is what we do in our lives and the legacy that remains. Hence... spread compassion and share love.
I agree with what's posted above. But I also see in some of our new grads who have come from other areas a certain something that is missing. They are clock watchers, expect to leave on time each and every shift. They are checking their cells constantly. Know to the last detail how many patients the other staff have, quibble over assignments and the workload. They just don't see themselves as part of a team.I admit to liking my paycheque and I provide good, comptent care but I don't live for my job and don't think about it once I leave. I'm there for the stretcher transfers, help my co-workers and have never walked out of a room because it was shift change to leave something half done for the next shift to finish (yes, I've seen it done by a former IT specialist who went into nursing for the "guaranteed cheque")
I def. agree with Fiona. I work in healthcare and have seen coworkers walk out of a room because they look at it like its the next shift 's problem. I agree that some dont see themselves as part of a team. I give KUDOS to those who work hard and work TOGETHER. :)
I went into nursing as a second career, and yes, the pay raise from being a landscape laborer/supervisor was a huge motivation for that.Being indoors when it snows was too. As was finally doing something that......satisfied my desire to feel like a valuable community member. Not that as a landscaper my work had no value, but I needed more.
People who feel the need to point out all those who are in it "for the money" are usually just...........passive aggressive personalities who are scared of something themselves.
Notice, most people who make posts of this nature are...........students or new nurses. Some are not even nursing students yet, they are still trying to be accepted into a school.
They are scared, of not getting into school or not completing it or of not becoming a good nurse.............so they feel the need to beat their chest by preaching about how "there are too many people here for the money. Not me, I am here because God spoke to me and said I could heal with my love".
Its a coping mechanism. It goes away quickly after you are in the field.
U said it BEST !!!!!! GOOD FOR U :) I admire ur statement "I am here because GOD spoke to me and said I could heal with my love". POWERFUL STATEMENT !!!! - Tor1
Sorry, but I will disagree with you an an agreeable manner.A person can be motivated by the dollar signs and still be a technically competent nurse who displays a sense of caring and commitment to each and every patient. The only "true nurses" in existence are the ones who do this job absolutely for free, without receiving one dime of compensation for the things they do.
If there are any "true nurses" out there, please share your experiences.
Its called "Motherhood." Mothers always care for their children, not for money but because of Unconditional LOVE. Hence.... Love/Compassion. Taking care of people/children.

I hate to break it to ya but not all mothers care for their children. And because of the baby bonus in my country some people have children simply for the payout and welfare they receive and not one cent will go towards their kids, it goes to feed their addiction, pay for their plasma tv etc.
OK, Can't help but say....
1.Loved the "Ohhhh.. you're going to be one of those nurses" comment made by a CNA
2. I DO NOT make enough money for the job.
3. I am sick & tired of the lazy and the whiny
4. If nursing is only a calling, be a CNA, they have less paperwork so get to spend more time taking care of actual pts needs (this is when I will get flamed pretty hard, however, not too worried cause those I work with know I am not #1 above)
5. I don't walk in anyone elses shoes because they pinch my toes.
I am not going to reply to this anymore. The last thing I have to say.....
Life is way to short to be spreading around hate/judgements. Life is way to short to be walking around all ****** off all the time. Instead of complaining and finding ways to argue, how bout this for the tip of day ....
Live ur Life to the best of ur ability. God Bless :)
***** By the way, how bout fighting something worth fighting about .... Indifference !

Thank You

i think you missed the point.
no, i didnt miss the point .... the statement said this " i am here because god spoke to me and said i could heal with my love". hence.... what i have been saying all along..... spread love/compassion. thats what god's being telling all of us, but very few actually listen. people tend to point out the negative in life, instead of looking for the good in life. people need to think "outside the box "
remember.... the crazy old man in patch adams....
-people choose what to see, but people need to see what others choose not to see. (awesome statement.)

actually, you did miss the point.
I dont hate to say anything..I just state it as it is! Like the military, nursing can be a career change for people that have been laid off work. For the money, or the long hours, and politics.
Here in london, ontario, canada, there was threat of nurses being laid off, so the management could hire more executives. Or so it seems. There is severe need for front line workers, ie nursing staff! But the management is failing to realize this.
There is a need for GOOD quality nurses, no matter where they are on the food chain! With the population getting older, more mature nurses are needed.
But they can do only so much! Its the doctors that call the shots! We had first hand experience 3 months ago with the American Health Care System in Michigan! All the nurses could do was stand around until the next meds or procedure was required. No doctor was available. The hospital was part of a chain. Lots of hype but no steak.
