I hate nursing

Published

I started an ADN nursing program over a year ago and graduate in May. I have the highest average in class, and I really seem to be doing well. However; I hate everything nursing, I really only started the program because I was bored, and now I feel to far invested to quite. I have to keep telling myself that this is a great job, but in reallity this job holds a lot of responsibility, "crappy responsibility." In addition I feel tremendous pressure from my family, my husband, and my husbands family to finish and work. It's not like I don't already have a BSN from another university, and my husband makes an excellent salary, I don't have to work. I keep hoping that all the pretentious people in class with their over enthusiastic "I love nursing" attitude will be non-existent in the workplace. This is me just venting, but if you have any productive advice or have felt this way I would love a response. However; if you are just wanting to tell me how terrible I am, please keep it to yourself.

You said you hated your last job and now you hate nursing. Do you just hate working period? If your husband has a good job and you do not have to work then why are you in school to get a job to work? I would do what others suggested, finish out your degree and get your license and keep it up...just in case.

well thanks for all the imput, some of it really great

I think I was just having a bad day and focusing on all the things I hate. I hate that feeling that I can mess up and hurt someone at anytime, and during clinicals our instructor is virtually impossible to locate. Furthermore; when I was talking about people in my nursing class, I was refering more to the ones that love everything nursing and are always excited regardless of the duty. I mean really who loves cleaning poo, lets be honest here. Anyways I am going to finish and sit for the NCLEX, but I really want to explore other options besides direct pt. care. Any suggestions?

Well although majority of the people dont like cleaning human wastes,I knew a girl who loved to wash patients, made them feel good, give them back massage.

So dont assume that just because you obviously dont have a calling other people are the same.

You started nursing school because you were "bored"?

I'm trying really hard here to understand, and to not offend anyone. But that in itself just makes me speechless. I think you need to rethink what you want to do with your life.

I'm not even IN nursing school yet, but my wanting to apply has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that I'm "bored".

Good luck to you, and I hope you figure out what you really want to do.

I completely understand what you are talking about the crappy responsibility. I look at the nurses on my clinical floor running around like crazy people nonstop, getting screamed at by the docs, the patients (b/c they are so understaffed), and like you said one little mistake and it's someone's life. I also hate what I have gotten myself into. I honestly can't see myself doing it for the rest of my life. Finish your degree, you don't have to use it, but finish.

I don't understamd why you would continue if you HATE it. And like someone said earlier, I wouldn't want to work with someone that hates their job. It's a downer. I love nursing. Otherwise, there is no way I would be doing it.

You only get to live once, and you don't get a redo, do what you love. Don't worry about pleasing other people, please yourself.

Just some input. :twocents:

You need to find your center or something, original poster!

Until then, vent away. All those negative vibes got to go somewhere...

Too right you are! Better out than in I always say.

Finish in case you want to do something with it. There is so much you can do and you may find the right thing.

If you want to stay home, that is great, too! There is nothing wrong with that. Your loyalty should be to your family before anything and it is honorable that you may want to do this. My carreer is successful but family came first for me and my wife (also an RN). It is paying off since I believe I have two exceptional children.

Then before taking someone's else spot who dreamed of being a nurse you should have had shadow a nurse first.

just from reading your post you don't seem to have the right attitude to take care of people anyway, so why go into nursing if you think you hate it so much???? regardless of what other people want you to do, its still your life. and last but not least, would you want someone with your thoughts taking care of your husband or other family members when they are sick??

I worked in a hospital, I knew. I worked long and hard and earned my spot. I don't know very many people who dream of being screamed at, overworked, and understaffed. If everyone did what they dreamed of, where would we be? I don't have to love what I do, I have to be good at it.

Dont you like it just a bit of it???????
