I hate clinicals!

I work hard and excell at most tasks, but i recieved crappy grades for my "Attitude." I was told I should be open to criticism. I dont like criticism because most of the time I am good at what I've learned. Im not a know it all, but most people are far below me in intelligence. how should i handle this?

Start excelling at attitude. You have been given a direction and you should listen to it. Tasks are only one part of this job you need to be proficient at. I don't know you at all, but your statements sound like you are a know it all, and arrogant. Watch people who are rated with a good attitude, and watch what they do. Then figure out a way to make it work for you. Step one is to admit there might be an issue here. Good luck.

I like all the criticism. Maybe I've identified a weakness? Its probably good to be aware of any weaknesses I have. Things seem to be going smoother now. I have moved on to different things that are more technical where I do better.

That arrogant attitude of yours will continue to get you in trouble mate, you might be an intelligent guy, but you have to remember that some of the nurses you will be working with will have been nurses for a very very long time. Their level of knowledge and experience will trump your 'intelligence' anytime..

Get used to your new environment, there will be times when you love nursing and times when you dont, but as long as you can get on with the people around you and you are competent you'll be fine.

Also citicism is great, nursing is deffinitly not a my way or the highway profession, the sooner you understand that the better i think :)

I did better this time at hospital clinicals. I had some trouble with contact precautions. What does a person do if they have to go in and out of the room 50 times? Do you waste 50 gowns and gloves? I didn't get a clear answer from my teacher, but I got marked down for it.

It seems like a very slow pace in the hospital too. I have to pick one patient. Do I help with any other patients? I'm trying to improve my grades, but got just C's on the criteria. I chose to help give another patient a bath and the aide made it clear to my teacher. I did not recieve any extra credit for it. Maybe I shouldn't bother doing that type of stuff if I have this one patient. I got my patient up, fed him, bathed him gave meds, cleaned up his room, did an assessment. After all that it was pretty boring because he didn't say much. Felt like I shoud be doing something.

I understand your situation man, but sometimes the Ego has to not be shown, its hard to accept the fact of taking criticism from people escepially during school, but you have to manage not to show it and learn from it. In nursing school if you just have to follow what they say and follow step by step until your out there on your own and you can go your own way. remember its only temporary have fun with the situation and just accept and agree what they say, never know some might help.

Have you gone back and read this truckin? You have a horrible attitude. Why should the instructor give you extra credit? You-are-not-special. Just repeat that and you will be ok. How old are you anyway?

When I'm at the hospital I try to not think about just pleasing my clinical instructor. Everyone in that hospital I am in contact with is judging me, and watching me. I am friendly to the doctors down to the person who sprays water on the damn indoor plants. I smile, nod, say hello. Why? Because I'm not an ass first of all, second I may want to apply there some day. A bad attitude will follow you around and haunt you.

So you would only help out with other patients just because you expect extra credit for it? That is a poor attitude. You will not like being a nurse if you expect an extra pat on the back every time you do your job. Yes in clinicals if you are done with your patient then help others, answer bells, stock carts or do anything else that needs doing.You will make a good impression. When you are working as a nurse you will not sit on your butt and do nothing.You will be expected to pitch in and help others. That's the job.

Don't think that the criticism stops just because you are out of school. You will still have annual performance reviews and meetings with the manager if your work is not up to snuff. Also remember that with nursing the learning never stops.You will never "know it all" and you will learn from everyone you meet.Don't close your mind to learning from others that you think are not as smart as you, you will be in for a shock.

You need to be nice to everyone that you come into contact with at the hospital. You never know if the person you are talking to is an administrator, hiring manager, nurse manager, or will eventually be someone who is one of those. You need to consider that you have to ask other people to help you out with things. That includes maintenance personnel, CNA's, cafeteria workers, and the list goes on and on. The more people that get a good impression of you, the more likely it is that they are going to spread the word that you're a good person to work with, and for, the more likely you are going to find out that people in other departments are willing to do things for you, simply because you asked them to.

I do what I can when I can because that's all I can do. When I have time to assist other people, I definitely ask them if they need a hand. I don't do that when I do not have time to spare to give them a hand. It does not make any sense for me to mess up my daily timeline to give someone a hand when it will put something else I have to do back quite a bit. However, even if I have to do that, I am definitely very pleasant about it because being rude does not get me anywhere. Say something to the effect of "I can help you after I do this…" is far more effective than just a "no sorry can't do it."
