..well I got my letter today., I was kinda hopeful that i might still had passed because like i said i have klike 8 people that tested with me that week in CA that no one had got their results yet, and monday was a CA BRN holiday, so i said to myself "mabye, i have till fri or sat" "then, if not its over"
but i knew once i saw my wife carry in the big envelope, she gave me that "look"
I am more detemined now than ever. mostly out of spite. this will not beat me. I am going to pass this and get a tatto that has NCLEX-RN/CA BRN with a circle and a line through it !
I was going to start today to study but, im going to play with my 2yr old son and be with him this week. "recharge" the batteries. last time i failed i started the next day. im going to use the saunders book for content review, and im going to buy the kaplan QBANK for questions.
the only thing i wish is: the way i learn the most is reading the rationales on the questions, especially the ones i miss....i wish that i could see my NCLEX test to see the ones i missed and see the rationales. but, alas, i know those quesions will never see the light of day.
It would be so easy for me just to quit and go back to being a cop again, the money is the same, the hours and shifts are the same, my ex-co-workers and SGT would love tohave me back,
BUT i have never quit in anything i have done, many posts i read in here (daily) are from people that have passed on 3rd, and 4tn, even the mod silverdragon says she passed on her third time.
the first 2 times i took the exam i took the long drive alone to the test center, next time im gonna bring my family with me for support..might as well do everything i can to increase my "luck" or "karma"...
My lucky rabbits foot is coming in the mail next week.
To those of you that im in contact with that also tested that week in CA, dont give up hope..you could have better news. good luck.
JON
Mytonezucs--
you know what i realize, from taking th test twice, from reading posts in here and from waht im told.
at FIRST i believed the NCLEX was a test to see if we are "minimumly" qaulified, to be nurses..that it tested what we learned in school, the culmination of ALL that hard work, clinicals, etc.. and that it was rare that anyone failed. I admit, i did NOT give the NCLEX the proper "respect" (i will use that term looslely) ..and that had something to do with my failure.
NOW, i KNOW what it is--I will bet any internal organ that i have, that i "know" enough "nursing" content to pass a "minimum" standard test, i am quized , almost daily by several RN's who work in different fields, they all were trhe best in their nursing class, my wife was number #2, they all felt i was ready, i felt i was ready--i actually did think, i passed last time, i know i didnt "ace" it by any means, but i felt i answered enough questions corrctly to pass-obviously i was wrong]
i took a course in frisco with sally lingerquist ?? and she said " all you have to do is answer MOST of the easy questions" right and HALF of the hard ones, and you will pass"--I honostly felt i did just that.
The NCLEX is in no way indicative of how smart, how good of a nurse you ARE or WILL be. people will say it about "criticallly" thinking, well i was a police office for 5 years and successful at that, i cannot think of another proffession where you had to "critically think", the law and how you deal with people on a day to day basis, with your LIFE and theirs.
So what i BELIEVE now about the NCLEX is that it is about what the makers of the test want you to "think" like them. are they right ? absoultely not, in nursing there is more than one way to do things in our field. especially when dealing with people and treatment. We see it all the time on our floors, theres a problem, and several nurses talk about how to solve it...ITS NOT ALWAYS "JUST" ANSWER B on a test, it COULD also be A ??! right ? THAT is critical thinking, finding more solutions to a problem, you talk about priority ?? well see on the test you can narrow it down to 2 answers and both are REALLY close
example:
who should you help first ?
1. a 34 yr old man who is going to be going to be eaten by a bear
2. a 27 year old woman going to be eaten by a tiger
..uhhh we all can laugh at this because we see it,
we saw it in school..EVERY test we had, there were many answers that had another option, so we argued to the instructer, and they considered it, we were successful at time but others we wernt
NCLEX does not care, its there way or the highway. period. thats fine, its their show, im appling to be a "member" of their "club".--
i was hard on myself for a long time, i am still somewhat now, but i know--this test WILL NOT define me. I will take it (as many times needed) and i will pass it, I will deal with the brn only when i mail them my check every 2 years.---
thats my rant for the day.
when do you test ?--i wish you the best.
I don't have a test date yet. I failed NCLEX, the wife had a baby, she went to work and I became Mr Mom. Once the sleepless nights began, studying went out the window. I tip my hat to all the moms with kids that made it through.
This whole experience has been a nightmare. People don't understand a degree with no job, so to most I'm a bum.
My main beef with the whole thing is there's no main source of test preparation that reflects NCLEX at all. I took a review course(twice) and got the same "all you have to do is get half right". That would be fine and dandy if the test didn't change based on your answer. There's a big difference between "Just get 50% right" and "passing based on the level you get 50% right".
The lower level questions are generally harder anyway because they're straight memorization.
I'm not a kid. I came out of over 15 years working with a family. I took nursing very seriously. In school I was a study machine, because my family depended on me.
I made it through and was ready, needing to work. I passed the course, even got clinical awards.
Now a brick wall.
So now I continue to study. Things have settled down and I have more time now. I'm doing the Saunders review and questions book and debating on Kaplans QB. I'm also reviewing some of the review course notes.
I'm thinking maybe August.
And yes.........Male nurses do rock. I'm also a musician.
MaleNursesrock, its good to know you still have the determination in you. I tested the day after you did, and i'm losing hope since my name isn't up yet. What matters right now is the support of your family and i'm sure you'll be writing R.N after your name in God's time. For now, let's just start reviewing for the next battle and remember that Winners don't quit. By the way I'm using suzanne's first tip now
..wow , i can relate to you mytonezucs..heres my last month,
we have a 2 year old boy already
we were adopting a baby girl born march 10th
my wife was pregnant.
so basically we were looking at having 3 children under 3,
hers what happened,
on the way to the hospital to pick up our daughter, the mother changed her mind, .....very disappointing, moreso for my son who we had preped for his new sister, and then brother or sister
my wife miscarried a few days after this
i test the following week--its been rough on the family, really rough-
im not using this as an excuse on why i failed but..it was rough. but life goes on, the sun will rise tommorrow regardless.
iright now im also a stay at home dad, wife works OB as RN
heres the thing about the "easy" questions,
its all subjective..
example, i work(ed) cardiac--so specific cardiac questions-i know, my wife would miss casue she works OB, she says "that was a hard question" but to me it was easy--i can see how if i ddint work there i wouldnt know the answer--
so, my question is (for the NCLEX writers)...how do they "determine" the level of questions.
basically any question you dont know......is hard (duh)..there are some things i know that you dont and things you know that i dont, i mean we all know ABC, you NEVER give pot iv push, "check for allergy to shellfish" (always love that one) etc...those are to me "basic", but past those---you get into the "grey" area.
BABYGURL--
you know the BRn was closed on monday, it was yet another "govment holiday", so since our beloved BRn is always a day behind on the website, tommorrow will be the first day of the week, as far as current updates, thats what i was looking forward to until.....well..
you still can hang onto that hope.,i wish you the best--i dont wish this failing nclex on anyone, especially us in CA--the "quick result deficit state"---
I've been following all your threads and really wish you the best this time around. I took mine today and don't know what to think. The last time I tested was back in '00 so I had LOTS of work to do. My test shut off at 75 and seeing how I tested out of CA BRN and at Tokyo test site...it might be a while.
I read where you said you would take your family with you to your next test. That's what I did and I believe it truly helped me take my mind off the test. I did not study for 2 days before the test.
GOOD LUCK!
:heartbeat:nurse: Right here and now, this very day, you have the power to think, the power to dream, the power to make decisions, the power to act, to create, to learn, to influence others, to change things, to experience and enjoy. On top of all that, you have the power to invent, to innovate, to change your mind, to understand, and to move in a new direction.
You have the power to persevere, to work with discipline and focus, to manage your time, to recognize opportunities, to take responsibility and to act responsibly, to solve problems, to effectively utilize your resources, and to make a positive difference in your world.
Some people take these very same powers and achieve great things. Others live as if they didn't even know they had them. Still others destroy the value of their own positive, living powers by directing them toward negative pursuits.
You have the power to do great things. How will you make use of that power today? It is an incredible opportunity and an awesome responsibility. It is real and it is yours. Challenge yourself to transform that power, with your thoughts and actions, into your own special greatness. :redbeathe:up:

You MUST know about the "law of attraction"!! If you don't, you should read the book/see the movie, "The Secret". It's really amazing and it WORKS!!!!

I just don't get it. There has to be a huge gap between nursing school and NCLEX. The two don't know each other. And because of it lives are on hold. I know because I'm one of those lives.
Is it just a crap shoot or is there a method to beating it? I'm at a loss here. I was really pulling for you not only for your sake but for any indication that it's not just the luck of the draw.
Did you feel any more confident this time with all the extra studying you did to prepare? Anything? If the answer is no then there's something wrong with the system.
This all sounds negative I'm sure but I'm just trying to figure out this thing that keeps us from moving on. There has to be a logical way to prepare other than "we'll just keep trying until we get it".
If that's the only answer for us then it's just like I said. There's a big gap between nursing school and NCLEX.
So tell me you felt like you got one more question right this time. Tell me your score was better, anything other than study your butt off but it's still just the luck of the draw.
I wish you the best and admire your attitude. I'll be pulling for you again.
