Definitly sign up for the HESI right away. I didn't decide to apply until last Oct. so by the time I found out about the HESI all the weekend slots were full. That left me flying to MI for a .5hour test midweek. Not fun!
If anyone wants my HESI study guide, send me your address and I will mail it over. It's just sitting on a shelf here.

what do you think of the class so far? i really like her teaching style.
i have been reviewing all weekend for our quiz...ekkk test anxiety. lol
Sadie,Welcome to Michigan. I was in your shoes 10 years ago. If you go to this site of Macomb college:http://www.macomb.edu/NR/rdonlyres/CA73D786-8210-4C9C-842A-185BCDAA7827/0/NursingPacket2009.pdfIt will give you all of the info that you need for this year's requirements for the HESI and deadlines, etc. I do caution you....watch those deadlines because there were many students that missed out on taking the Hesi last year due to not knowing this info.I would also encourage anyone who hasn't already, to go to the Nursing Seminar that the college has. They have many sessions and there is so much information and you can have lots of your questions answered as well. It was especially helpful to me since I was just returning to school after being away for quite a while.

Thanks for the info, this is valuable info. I will check out the info sessions.
Good Luck. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Hi there!
I'm new to Allnurses.com. I am an August start, too. Thank goodness! I am super excited/nervous. Can't wait to finally get started (I'm not that young, either!) :). Have you heard when we're supposed to get info on CPR, blood work, books, etc.? I just received uniform and scholarship information so far. Two more months...
Hockeymom,
I haven't waited for them to send anything. Actually, I'm not quite sure that they will be sending anything as far as the CPR and the health form and lab stuff goes. I can tell you what I've found out though.
For CPR: You can either look up American Heart Assoc. on the web and research where it is given closest to you (AHA is good for 2 years, Red Cross only for 1 yr,) or you can call Royal Oak Fire Dept and find out when their next BLS class is . The class costs $40.00. They offer it twice a month. Actually, I think there's one on June 24th.
For your lab work: The least expensive that I have found it is at Midwest Health Center in Dearborn. It will be worth the drive because for all of the titers , TB test and drug screen, it's only (and when I say only, that's really inexpensive compared to anywhere else I've called) $145.00. Of course you have to go back to have the TB test read, so if you can have that done closer to you, find a place. I believe that they also do physicals and they give a discount because you are a nursing student, although they asked me if I was a Henry Ford student, but quoted me the same prices that I have seen for the HFCC students.********One thing, I went to my own doc because I was going anyway, and since I have an HMO, she said that all of my labs should be covered with the exception of the drug screen.
So I am excited and ready too! I went up to the bookstore today and I swear...it is such a racket. They have the Nursing section closed off, but I wandered in there anyway and I was intercepted by no less than 3 employees (all of whom could be my children, mind you), asking me if they could "help me?" Well, I don't need any help in seeing that they are trying to keep me from seeing which books I'm going to have for this coming semester. There were two sets of "Fundamentals of Nursing" bundles there, no prices, no class number, but I'm almost positive that I saw them in the computer for last year. I also know that the book (author Taylor) is not being updated to a new edition so far this new semester. I can't imagine that the instructors would suddenly change to another author for a new year, but I'm sure that stranger things have happened.
So, of course, for now, I can't even search for mty books online, but that doesn't prevent me from making my remarks to the poor kids who are just trying to make a few bucks at their summer jobs. Next time, I'll just gripe to the manager...:argue:
I think I'm cranky today :angryfire.
I get to order my uniforms soon !!! How exciting !!! ( That was not sarcasm-really!)
PM me if you need anything else or just post it...
Thanks for all the great info! I ordered my scrubs online yesterday and they have shipped already. I'm actually excited about that, too. I am waiting to hear about a PCT position with St. John so I'm hoping they will take care of my labs for me.
I remember from orientation that they said they would send out information about the online stuff you had to do within one month of starting. I forget what it's called right now. I will have to pull out my trusty handbook.
I'm thinking we will have to shop around for a better deal on books. I've heard from several people that they are cheaper online and at other bookstores. I bought my books at the campus bookstore for past classes but that was only one per semester. It will hurt a lot more with 6 classes/semester.
Thanks again!

Hi everyone, congradulations on getting in! I just finished my first year in the nursing program and thought I'd throw in my two cents worth of advice. The uniforms have no stretch or give, so if you don't have the perfect body (and how many of us actually do?!) you may want to go up a size, at least on the tops, the bottoms don't seem as bad.
As for the books, don't worry about rushing out to get them all before classes start because you really won't need them all...just wait till you get the syllabus on the first day of class.
I also suggest getting Sauders Comprehensive NCLEX Review and the Med-Surg Study Guide (for 1600's)...using these when you're studying for your lecture exams will really help.
Good Luck!

Also, you dont need your Nurse packs for the first day of class, chances are, it will be two weeks after class starts that they'll actually be available - so cut the bookstore some slack and don't hound them continuously
Try to get a job in a hospital over the summer if you can, it'll help alot
