I got into Nassau Community College!!!

Published

Hi everyone. I have never posted here before but today I have some good (make that GREAT) news!!!

I got accepted to Nassau Community College's evening nursing program! They only accept about 35 people so I was VERY nervous!

Well, I just wanted to share my news! I look forward to being on this website a lot more often now. :)

NurseMeme:

I applied for the fall but did not get in. My grades are pretty good except for the C+ in math. I will be retaking it over the summer.

My question is that it states in the catalog and the paperwork I received from the department that they would accept either Microbiology or AHS 105. I could not get into micro so I am taking AHS 105. Do you know of anyone who took AHS 105 and got into the program.

Thanks

yep...there are lots of students that took AHS 105, the program accepts it. The only reason micro is prefered by the majority of students is because you will need to take it eventually anyway if you go for your BSN.

NurseMeme - thanks for the response. I will take AHS 105 in the fall since I could not get into the micro. If I do not make it into the nursing program for the spring I will take micro in the fall.

not sure if you're interested in taking it over the summer, But, i kept checking the registration site for BIO 214, and a spot had opened up, and i was able to register for it. Theyre strict with the summer classes- in the sense that your bill needs to be paid within 1 business day of having signed up for the class, and if you don't, then they drop you from it.

i also heard that alot of people taking Micro this semester signed up for it for this summer or fall *just in case* they failed it this semester, so its worth it to keep checking the site.

2 years? dont you just have to take the nursing classes? might as well went and got your BA no?

I was in a BA program (I was going to start in the Fall of 06 but I applied to Nassau and got in so I'll be going to Nassau instead). Since I work full time, I need an evening program and the only BA-Nursing evening program I could find was LIU in Brooklyn. I went there for 1 semester. I hate that school. Their nursing program is HORRIBLE... and their tuition is about $20,000 more a year than Nassau. Oh, and it would take me 3 years... and it's a lot more classes which would have been harder since I have no choice but to work full time. So for me, getting my Associate's works better. This way it's only one class at a time, for 4 semesters so I can still work and I won't be overwhelmed.. and it is WAAAAAYYYYY cheaper (about $1,000 or $2,000 a semester (depending on # of credits) as opposed to $10,000 a semester) And it is only 5 minutes from my job as opposed to 1 1/2 hours away from my job, and I won't have to pay for all that extra gas and parking fees.... the list goes on and on as to why this is a WAY better choice for me. :)

So for some with more flexibility in their schedule, a BA would probably be better but for me this works out. :) Plus, I won't have tons of student loans because I plan on getting my BA when I'm a nurse and that way they can pay for it. :)

ohh..so your going p/t...do you know anywhere i can take my CNA..?

Nurse Meme, Did you attend the day or evening program? How much time was really required of you outside of the classes? (Like studying time, etc) How much did you need to study everyday? I'm a little scared because I will be working full time but I think all I need left are the nursing courses. They still seem really demanding so I'm going to be working my butt off but I'm just wondering what a first hand experience with the program was. :)

Anything you can tell me about the program would be great!

I attend the day program. It is a lot of work! I know you've probably heard that people spend hours upon hours studying everyday, but that is unnecessary. Some advice/experiences:

- read your notes everyday, if only for 15min. That way everything will be fresh in your mind and you can just build on it as you go...this way you wont be cramming for exams.

- Your total grade is composed of only your lecture exams. Unfortuately there are lots of other assignments that arent even graded (just pass/fail).

- go to the lab and practice skills. You will have to pass certain skills every semester (IV's, Vital Signs)

- STAY CALM and always think POSITVE!!! hahha...seriously though, I'll tell you the truth sometimes it will be hard to remain calm (especailly in clincial) But keeping calm will help you think much clearer, and thinking positively is always good for you : )

- If it is POSSIBLE at all, cut some hours at work. It really helped me to keep my stess level down.

- Utilize your instructors, thats what we're paying for, right? lol

- Make friends with your classmates!!!!!! The friends you will make in nursing school will be friends for life. NO ONE else in you life is EVER going to TRULY understand your stresses, hopes, dreams, acheivements, bad days etc. the way your nursing school girlfriends will! It really is a wonderful support system to have, because everyone is on the same boat and routing for each other.

- Just remember that it will go by really fast and if nursing is something that you REALLY TRULY want, you will absolutly love it!

hmm...I dont know what else to say right now, but if you have any other questions feel free to ask me. I love helping the newbees out, I remember being there not too long ago!!! ;)

NurseMeme, thank you soooo much for your tips. I will definitely keep them in mind! I register for classes on Tuesday. I guess they will tell me then what classes they acepted from my other schools and if I will have to take any over again? Hopefully all of my other classes tranferred over and I will only need to take the nursing classes. I'm so excited to be registering!!! :) Thanks again Nurse Meme for your help! I will definitely be asking you questions as they come along and I can't wait to hear about your experiences as you go along!!!

I just got my credit evaluation so I can answer your question tprashad. :) My GPA was a 3.49 when I applied. They gave me 35 credits (only the classes that were equivalent to any nursing program credits transferred over) They took all the courses needed for the pre-reqs except AHS 132... I have to take Anatomy & Physiology 2 before or during the spring semester.

All the evening AHS 132 classes are closed already for summer and fall! I'm going to try to squeeze myself in somehow (sometimes schools allow you to get into a course even if it is closed). I have to find out if NCC has that... my old school called it overtally (?) or something like that. We would go to the class on the first day because sometimes people don't show up or drop the class or withdraw so we are able to stay in the class.

tprashad or Nurse Meme, since you go there, do you know if it is possible to get into a class after it has closed? Do they have this over-ride/overtally system at NCC? Thanks for your help. :)

Just to let you know... i just checked the NCC website, and a seat actually opened up for AHS132 evenings during the summer session! (You have to pay tuition infull within 1 business day of registering for the class, so they drop people fromt hem pretty quickly if not paid- thats how i got into Micro for this summer!). If you can get there tomorrow, you may be able to register for it!

Thank you so much! I saw that last night so I am up bright and early now to get there at 8 am and try and register for this class. :) This would really be a life saver! I'll let you know if I got in. :)

I hope you can get it for the summer! If not, you CAN get in if you find the chairperson and beg him lol...I had to do that last semester for micro. AHS 132 is a co-rec for N105 so if you cant get in this summer/fall they will definately get you seat for the spring.

Welcome! Hope you were able to get in!!!! (btw- i'm sure you could petition to get in, and get the professor to sign you in since you're already accepted into the program--- i think that gives you Some sort of priority!). You can call the department to find out who the professor is, and then contact them. That's what they had told me when i asked about Micro.
