I Got Accepted To Chamberlain Nursing Program For Oct. 2006!!!!

Published

:balloons: I just found out that I got into the nursing program for Oct. 2006 @ Chamberlain College of Nursing in St.Louis formerly known as Deaconess College of Nursing. I'm so excited I will finally get to make a move towards my degree and hopefully soon be an RN. My advisor said that I will get my package next week. Good Luck to all that have applied & I hope to make new friends & see new faces in St.Louis.

Future RN, Carolyn

That makes it sound like this is normal and is to be expected????? I understand not wanting to 'slam' the school, but if you have some advice on how to get around within the system I would personally appreciate it.

You're right, I do not want to slam the school at all. There are some top-notch instructors and your peers will become an incredible support network for you. With that being said, in my opinion, I think the school is completely understaffed for the size of the current student body. The staffing is not keeping up with enrollment. It takes an incredible amount of professionalism and patience in dealing with the staff - again, in my experience. It started out this way and is only getting worse. You can get what you need eventually (or so I'm told).

In the case of attending CCN, the squeaky wheel will get the oil first!! Of course you won't get anywhere by being ugly. Just keep following up on your own stuff via email, messages, and voice mail. Don't be concerned about aggravating them, just keep following up. Also, ask whomever tells you something to reiterate it in writing via email. You may get a different response each time you contact someone and no one will take responsibility for what someone else, and sometimes themselves, have told you. Just like in nursing...DOCUMENTATION, DOCUMENTATION, DOCUMENTATION.

This is a very intense program and you really have to want to be a nurse badly to do it this way, as is the case with myself and my class. Don't get behind in your studies! There's no way to pull it all off if you do. It can be done, though. Good luck and all the best!

I am considering the Chamberlain on-campus BSN. Does anyone know of any hospitals that pay for a student's tuition/fees to Chamberlain in exchange for a contract/promissory note to work for the hospital? I currently live in Arizona, but I'm certainly willing to relocate and contract for 3 years or however long the hospital would require.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm very dissapointed with my Chamberlain Online ASN experience so far. Overall, I sense disorganization with the college administration and lack of critical thinking and planning with the instructors.

Advisement/Registration provided erroneous information that was often given at the last minute. Staff was mostly non-communicative. These problems are most likely associated with the acquisition of the school by Devry (DV:NYSE) from Tenet. I'm almost certain staffing and budget changes were made that negatively impacted the quality of service received by students/customers.

Instructional design could be improved by extending chat times to at least 1.5 hours per week. Given the number of students in chat, the volume of material to cover, and the complexity of some of the material, 1.0 hour each week is not sufficient. This one hour is usually reduced due to instructors shutting down the chat 5, 10, or 15 minutes before the allotted time.

Instructional content be enhanced with instructors explaining the underlying logic of the material assigned.

This experience feels like a self-directed program so I would not recommend it to someone with no background in healthcare.

I have no plans to continue with the Chamberlain online program past the LVN portion.

*back to the books*

You summed it up very well...the program is basically a debacle.

I don't know if I agree with 'debacle', but I see many areas for improvement. But online learning is such a 'new' concept in healthcare, that I can see current students being a springboard for more change. It's a lot tougher than I ever imagined and the load is overwhelming, not for the faint of heart or easily discouraged that is for darn sure!

Can you guys tell me how it's going through chamberlain. I am applying for july classes and was wondering if there classes on line were hard such as the micro....Or would i be better off taking it in house somewhere else????Does it require alot of time and studying??? Let me know, thanks, shelly

Hi Shelly,

I wanted to let you know that the basic classes such as Micro, A&P, Math, etc. is through the DeVry website & it is actually pretty simple, I enjoy those parts of the course, but the nursing classes are a lot different it is brought to you through Webct & you have a weekly chat for an hour, but its not much & you don't really learn a lot from it, as online stands its basically self learning, if you want to know it then you have to figure a way to learn it, you have a test every 2 weeks in one of the classes & it covers 4 chapters @ a time. The instructors are great & there is a skills validations at the end of each semester in St.Louis. Well i hope this helps you & I wish you great success in your future. Email me if you like & I will try to answer all of your questions. Carolyn

Shelly-

This program is INTENSE, it moves very fast and you are really pretty much on your own, there is contact with instructors via Chat room once a week and email, but there is no way that everything can be covered in one hour of chat, or all questions be answered immediatley. If you get behind on your reading you will struggle ( as I did, and am), I am fighting to keep my 80% and it's a hard fight. You have to have 76% to pass and that is a low C on their grading scale. I am in Nursing Concepts and we have had a min. of 4 chapters to digest at one time. For me and my life this the only way I can complete my degree, I have often thought how much easier it would be to sit in class and actually have a teacher and other students to discuss things with. You have to travel to which is out of your pocket, if you are an out of state student, plan on having to go to MO during and at the end of Nursing Concepts, there are skills you will need to learn and be tested on and this is completely different than clinical validations ( this tidbit was omitted in my original info and has caused some issues with my check book).

I think all in all the school is great, they are providing a wonderful thing for students who need to approach their nursing education in a non-traditional way, but it tough to learn it on your own and there needs to be a very clear view of the 'prize' and some major motivation to stay on top of the material.

Best of luck to you!

I am still waiting to hear from the Chamberlain college. I applied for March and was told that I am required to take some type of pre admissions test in order to determine whether or not I am accepted. I am wondering if anyone else had to go through this red tape as I am a Lpn already.:o

congrats!!:balloons:

Yes I had to take a test also, and I have several transfering credits that I entered with, I ended up having to take a math course even though I had a 'B' from a college level algebra course on my transcript, I think it is all normal, just take the test and submit and they will tell you what you need to 'brush' up on and get you signed up. You really have no choice in wht you take and when, jsut wait (patiently) for your little slip of paper that tells you what classes you are enrolled and then wait some more for more info.

One peice of advice I have for you or anyone else considering Chamberlain, is that if you haven't truly exhausted all other means of getting your nusrins degree, then don't apply for Chamberlain....it's not easy and it's unorganized, be prepared to self teach all necessary material and do it at a fast pace, they are making tests harder, and have removed the policy of rounding grades....good luck
