Did anyone else get one. I'm looking to get to know some people for a study-group. All my friends got in last semester.
thank you CaGuy, I have seen those numbers. I was talking about the drop out rates, but its impossible to find those numbers anywhere.
I know that all of the orange county nursing programs are good and of course I want to be a great nurse, but I have read horrible things about GWC and I can't totally ignore that even though like everything on here, its just people's personal opinion.
Are you are going to Cypress because you feel it is the best college to prepare you to be a nurse?
I hope they let me know on Wednesday if I am in for sure or not! Maybe we will be classmates haha : )

Yes. When my study group and I took Micro at GW we were studying for 3-4 hours every night. Some girl that was sitting behind us goes, "I'm not even trying hard, GW is lottery, all I need is C's." It made us so mad. I wanna go somewhere that at least recognizes academic achievement in their selection process.
after the TEAS, the proctor at goldenwest told me that my teas scores moved me "up on the list" for admission, so I think that they look at grades and your test scores. I emailed cypress about where I was on the alternates list, Lydia told me that I was on the lower end of the list and that they do not start filling vacancies until after they have everyone's teas scores. They are giving the teas next week, so they will not start looking at vacancies until the week after. Goldenwest gave me until June 2 to make up my mind, so I am pretty sure that I am going to end up at Goldenwest in January because cypress will not know if they have a spot for me in time and I am not willing to gamble with the spot I have been offered.

I totally agree with you. I wouldn't think it's fair for someone who got by with a C to get into the program with someone who studied really hard for the A in the class.
I almost think that GWC just says its lottery so they don't have to spend hours with students who try to go in a make a good impression or get to know them. I tried that and she said "its all lottery" ...shut me up pretty fast.
Yet, they say that the longest anyone has ever waited to get into their program is 2 and a half years, if a true lottery were all they use, then statistically many people would literally NEVER get in. I have good grades and got in my second try but I understand the concern, it definitely sounds bad. I think we can all agree that a C student for pre-req classes couldn't stick it out in ANY nursing program for a whole 2 years. lol

So, yes, it is a lottery. But you are right, one is guaranteed a spot after waiting 2 1/2 years.

Please, Please, Please, don't pick a school based on those criteria. You want a school that will best prepare you to pass the NCLEX and be a good nurse.
Both schools have a high drop out rate. I've done most of my classes at Cypress and I did Pharm and Micro at GW.
These are pass rates for GW and Cypress for the last few years, from rn.ca.gov. The first box is the number of students who took the test from that program, the second number is the percentage of those students who passed the NCLEX.
Golden West
11391.15% 10390.29% 123 93.50% 172 87.79%
Cypress College
6595.38% 9298.91% 79 97.47% 100 94%
As you can see, the pass rates at Cypress College are quite a bit higher. With the narrowest margin at some %4 and the widest deviation at about %8 1/2.
Like I said, hopefully you pick a school based on quality, not ease. You have to know that it's gonna be hard, that you must commit everything for 2 years and that you will NOT be one of the ones that drop out.
