No offense, but I don't think many LVN's are aspiring to work in an STD clinic as their crowning nursing accomplishment.

No, but it's a job, and it's a paycheck, and it's also nursing experience... may not be a glorious job, and by all means I wouldn't want to do it either, but if it's a job that's willing to hire her, should she turn it down or not go and see if they're even hiring? It's not like she's going to be having sex with any of the people going in there... i'm pretty positive of that... and working in that type of setting, you can just about count on every person coming through the door has something that you need to double glove for and at least have the pretense that everyone is potentially a carrier of nastiness, and in other arenas, you don't get that, and find out after the fact that you touched a patient with HIV, or gave a shot to a patient and stuck yourself that had gonorrhea... at least this way, it keeps you on your toes everyday.

Since you've said you work in corrections, I'm kind of surprized that you seem to look down upon STD clinic work since, at least with the prison I work at .... we treat STD's all the time and it's one of the most common diseases we have to screen for next to TB.

Geez, what I said was mostly in jest. I never said I look down on STD's. I just couldn't see myself working in a STD clinic the rest on my life. I do work in corrections / psych and we see our share of STD's yes...but I work in this enviornment for the money and retirment. I simply can't make $36 an hour anywhere else and retire at 50 as an LVN. Most clinics don't pay a livable wage to LVN's..which is unfortunate.

I think that applying online is not always the best you should go straight into human resources.

I hope this is not taken the wrong way. I have not read all the postings, and maybe someone else has already offered a similar thought. I expect to graduate in May, so I don't yet have even the experience that you do. However, from reading your post it seems clear that English is not your native language, and your spelling/sentence structure leaves the impression that your command of the language is probably not what you would like it to be. I believe one of the critical skills needed in nursing is competent, clear communication, and I wonder if prospective employers might be a little concerned about your obvious lack of language proficiency... at least in English. If I were to offer any suggestion... it would be to get ANY nursing related job you could... for now... and really devote yourself to improving your command of the language (through classes, self-help support groups, whatever... but really commit yourself to learning and knowing how to clearly express yourself in an English speaking culture). Until you do, you are going to be placing yourself at a distinct disadvantage the moment you open your mouth to speak, or attempt to submit a written application. I really wish you well and every success. I'm sure you are doing much better here than I would be in any NON-English speaking culture.

I agree, well said. I would like to add that perhaps you could continue to work as a nursing assistant, and meanwhile find a place that assists non-native english speakers with language issues. I know at the school of education at univ.of virginia, they have special tutors for this. I bet if you went to your local community college they might have someone/somewhere to direct you. Good luck!

I UNDERSTAND TRY THIS WEB SITE THIS SHOULD http://sandiego.craigslist.org/BE OF HELP GOOD LUCK

I used to work in a state prison, well i still technically do. The prisons have a bad reputation because of many things. You will be working with very manipulative people who have spent years, if not decades abusing thier bodies with hard drugs...They come into the prison systems and some die due to non-compliance and past drug abuse and prison medical gets blamed for it.

The prisons are understaffed..because, who wants to work around rapists and murders??? With that said it has its bright sides.

Do prisons pay better than hospitals?

Prisons tend to pay LVNs/LPNs significantly more money than hospitals, because there's some risk involved. After all, you will be working with prisoners.

The hospitals here pay LVN's $0 an hour since they don't use us anymore..but they use to pay about $18./ hr. Prisons are paying $19 - 24 hr.

I'm having a hard time believing that someone would have trouble finding a job as a nurse especially in San Diego.....I know that hospitals have phased out LVN's but there are plenty of opportunity in the nursing homes....I know it's not a place where most want to work, but I know there is work there...I used to work in a facility where they welcomed new grads.....It doesn't make sense not to hire a new grad because whether you're a new grad or a seasoned nurse you still have to get trained on the job because you have to learn the facilities policies regarding meds, care etc. Good luck and I hope you find a job soon.
