Well I just got off a night shift and seen my first deceased client.... I feel soo bad b/c I took him to the bathroom and told him to call when he was done, but I had this feeling in the back of my mind that I should stay, but was like he's fine. So i went and charted on a client and thought maybe I'll just go check on him. Well I went into the bathroom and he was on the floor face down. He passed away 5 min after. I feel like it's my fault. I should have stayed with him. He was 91yrs old and earlier that day he told the nurses he was gonna pass away in the night. Sorry I just had to get that outta my system.
Sorry that you had to go through that. I work in the ER, so I see people die all the time. But, I will say that it is so much different when it is your patient. I've helped on several codes, and it didn't really phase me any, but I've only had to code 1 of my actual patients. I was okay during the code...but after...I was scared to death. I couldn't believe that it had actually happened. Try not to worry about it so much. People die when their time is up.
Just echoing the support of everyone else here... I hope you have some time off now, to re-group and rest a little bit! It sounds like you are working on a pretty high-acuity unit. Plus about that other nurse... no one can "know" when a pt is going to die for sure... and I believe that if it's your time to go, it's your time to go and nothing is gonna keep you here. You have been there for all of these pts at their very last moments that is an important part of nursing too. I say that but I know I would also be very upset if I were in your shoes. Have you been able to talk with anyone about what's going on, like a mentor at work or your family? Take care..
OMG who would have thought, another one died.... so that takes me up to 4 in 4 nights. Thank god i'm done my rotation and I graduate on friday. Thanks for all the support.
What a send off as your finish school and go into graduation exercises. I guarantee that you will never forget this experience! Now you'll have a tale to tell in the nurses lounge for the rest of your career. :chuckle Congratulations on completing nursing school. :balloons:

Hey,
I read this a while back, but just learned about this "phenomenon" in class last week, so I am back. :)
Congrats on the graduating!!
It is called the Balsava Manuver... (it's so popular that they had to name it!). When they exert the pressure in the bathroom, and have some sort of (known or unknown) cardiac issue, and then release the pressure, their blood pressure rises rapidly. And this is why they die...
