  1. Hi this started mid June 2016 and has gotten progressively worse. I also have it on my scalp which seems to have cleared up. My dad also has Psoriasis. I thought maybe the gloves. I already use Latex Free Nitrile gloves but heard u can start to react to nitrile gloves so I found a different kind that's made for people with dermatitis issues. So far have seen no difference. My family doc gave me a steroid cream which made it way worse. I saw a dermatologist who was useless so trying to get referred to a new one! My hands today have been the worst yet. I can barely stand to wash them. I just can't afford to be off work as a single mom.
  2. Hi I was wondering if there are any nurses here that could give me any ideas on how you do your job while having Psoriasis in your hands. Palms and back of hands. I have been recently diagnosed as my hands are a mess and I thought it was hand eczema. I work Home Care so I do not even see as many patients as say an acute nurse would. My hands are to the point I feel I'm going to go crazy as they hurt and are not getting any better. I saw the dermatologist for the first time and was rather discouraged. I hate to have to leave nursing but I'm at the point I don't know what else to do. Thanks!!!
  3. I have had an unusually sore arm at injection site. My vaccine was done 3 days ago. I was also very tired that night after getting it and slept 12 hours. I was talking to my other staff that worked that day and they said they were very tired that same night and arm is also very sore.
  4. Hey Im an LPN and have worked for a Medical doctor who practices alternative medicine who is basically a natropath doctor. I love the job soo much. It is amazing what come in through the door and the amazing people you meet. There is alot of heart ache for the patients who have fallen through the cracks of health care and everything is paid for by the patient due to the health care system does not recognize alternative therapies. You learn alot that you wouldn't normaly learn in a regular nursing job. The pay is usally higher and its clinic hours.. so no shift work. Hope this helps
  5. Hey.. i've been an LPN here in Edmonton, AB for 3 yrs. I love my job!! I took it through norquest through a satelite location in Camrose, AB its about an hour from Edmonton bc that was the area I was from. At that time the course was only 13months and very intense. I enjoyed doing it in Camrose d/t the fact there were only 18 of us which is nice with the smaller class size. More hands on and you become really close with your classmates. Norquest is good, but they wont let you return unused books unless you have dropped a course or quit.. which is a pain. Also since we were in camrose we had to come to Edmonton for our graduation which didn't seem to be as intimate bc we are graduating with over a 100 people we have never seen in our lives before. I had also applied to Red Deer College and have some friends that completed the LPN program there and they really enjoyed it. The class sizes once again are smaller more like 30 people. Also with taking it in Camrose or say Red Deer you sometimes get better clinical experience b/c you are going into more rural areas where you might see more since a bigger hospital is so far away. Also you might get extra time in say surgery if you really enjoyed it there d/t there are no other students needing time there. I think also athabasca does the LPN course by correspondance and have heard good things! Hope this helps.
  6. thanks for all the replies so far.. yah the building is soooooo old and i'm sure there is mold somewhere in there... I've been passing meds there for 3 yrs. So i'm not sure why since i switched to days this has started happening. I'll take the gloves and mask tip and try it for a while to see if it helps. and I dont have any drug allergies that I know of..
  7. So I work full time days 7 to 3 in LTC as an LPN. I'm passing meds out to 38-48 residents a day with two med passes. Most take their meds crushed. In the last 2 weeks by the end of my morning med pass my nose is running and my throat is sore. Didn't think anything of it b/c after a few hours at home i feel fine. Today it came to me that it may be from ingesting the powder from the meds i'm crushing. I try to be soo careful. Is this possible or is it related to something totally different. Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else. Thanks!!
  8. Hey... i know how u feel.. though i've only been working 10 - 12hour nights for the past 2 months and i was fine until last week i've gotten a chest cold that I cannot seem to fight no matter what I do... I love the job, but I think i may have to reconsider the night shift
  9. That's not only pre nursing... I've been an LPN for a yr and a half and i'm still doing some of that stuff.. i have no social life b/c i'm working full time evenings and part time days. I'm lucky if i can do laundry once every two weeks.. dont have much time to cook meals.. if i do i make lots and freeze it. And well i'm also working part time nights.. so sleep is hard to come by.. good luck..
  10. Hey I know what your going through... I was working full time evenings at a nursing home and then picked up 3 days a week at a clinic,, which is now 5 days a week. Then I found this other job that i really wanted.. but u basically picked your own availability.. so for the month of march i was working all 3 jobs... it wasn't so bad until my schedules started overlapping. I have taken a 3month absence from my full time nursing home job to see if I like the new job.. so if not I wont loose my senority at the nursing home.. good luck
  11. Thanks for the last post.. yes it's paramed. I think it would be a good experience, especially since i do want to work at the stollery. It just blows me away how low the pay is though at paramed.. I mean yah at the nursing home i'm looking after 42 patients compared to one.. but at the same time...I'm just really gonna have to think about it.
  12. Thanks.. yah i've been doing lots of research and i think i may turn the job down...
  13. Thanks for the reply... I did some peds in my practicum and deal with them at the clinic i work at. Though I haven't had much experience.. yet when i went for the interview the lady said i was well qualified for the job........
  14. I'm currently working in LTC. I'm making around 19.29 an hour Canadian. I've been at my job just over a yr. I love the residents and would do anything for them... but in the last 3 months i've just lost interest in the job. It's the same thing day in and day out. I'm 21 and i just can't see myself staying at LTC for my whole career. I plan on going to europe in august so I thought i'd stay there until then. But I was looking and found a job doing respite care for mothers with stable children in the home that need nursing care when the mom is not around. It sounds very interesting and good experience. Before the child comes home, I would go spend two days in the childrens hospital with that child learning their care. The only downfall is that I would be taking a pay cut. I would start at 15.95/hr canadian and get 70 cents shift differential and 70cents more on weekends...I just dont know what to do.. i hate to take a pay cut,, but at the same time it's better hours and more experience.. anyone have any advice?
  15. I was taught to not use alcohol swabs b/c the alcohol dries out the fingers especially if your checking their blood 4 times a day. Just cleanse well with normal saline. Also I was never taught to put gloves to do an accucheck or to wipe away the first drop of blood.
