I feel like I'm not going anywhere in Nursing!!!

I am currently feeling discouraged because the counselors at my school are telling me that there is no way that I can follow my dreams with this form of GPA. I called up several nursing programs and they are telling me that if I do not have a 3.8+ GPA then I should not bother applying. I am in my second year attending a local community college in California and I am currently working several prerequisites until I transfer into a four year university. My problem is chemistry and I suck at it. No matter how hard I try, I am not receiving A's for that course, but rather I am getting a B. I took inorganic chemistry and got a B+ and I am currently taking organic chemistry and it is crazy hard! I am nearly pulling off getting a solid B, but I want to strive for an A. If I struggle with chemistry, there is no way that I can survive microbiology because it was a big killer for many students! I currently have a 3.5-3.6 overall GPA and I feel there are so many students who are way smarter than me that are getting into the program---just like a snap. I don't know what else to do if I do not get accepted? I wish I could retake my chemistry courses but my school does not allow that unless you receive a D or F. I plan to apply to 8+ schools that also include CSU's and several out of states and see if they would accept me? Again, I am avoiding SFSU and CSU East Bay because this is what they told me and I was discouraged hearing those words from them. I was wondering what can happen if I do not get accepted to the program and what should I do? What are your stories with nursing school when you were applying? I would love to hear them since I am new to this website so I would like more input on pre-nursing students! :D

Many schools do not require organic chemistry for nursing -- it's more specialized like CRNAs. Your counselor is incorrect on that GPA. Look around for schools, you'll find a lot.

I am actually in your area and I go to University of San Francisco -- in their BSN program. Highly rated with high pass rate on NCLEX. Avoid SFSU.

I highly doubt the OP is taking the real Organic Chemistry, probably the Intro to Chem (includes some biochem, orog, inorgo etc) class that most pre-nursing majors take.

I have indeed reread the post for your amusement and am 99% sure the OP is not taking the traditional o-chem series as I have NEVER seen a program actually require the 2 semester pre med/bio/chem major courses.

The OP is most likely struggling in the nursing chem that most people had to take including myself (Although I later took O-chem on my own time).

That's fine and dandy what you may interpret, however, until you know, why would you discredit the OP? Poster said he/she took inorganic (which I'm assuming is the general chem) chemistry and is now taking organic chemistry. Do you treat your patients the same way? lol

Well Im not taking the actual organic chemistry course, it is more like intro to organic/biochemistry. It is indeed a tough class and I am just trying to apply to schools that are willing to accept me. I mean, I'm just stressing about my GPA and B's in prior to nursing school is like a big fat F on my book. Seriously, I'm probably going to get another B in microbiology since I never heard of any of the students from my community college ever earning a solid A. Nursing schools in California are overcrowding the student population and my best bet is to probably apply out of state since I have no chance receiving a BSN in California... or maybe go for an alternative major, which I dont know yet. AHHH.

Sorry for the misunderstanding! I am currently taking Survey of Organic/Biochemistry and I had a B+ in Survey of Inorganic/Organic Chemistry.

So, I did suggest the school I was going to. We have a pretty massive program and you have a good chance of getting in. I would recommend looking at it. Don't be a pessimist!

I found out it was a Catholic school, and I am a Buddhist. The issue is that my parents will probably blow off a storm as if I was betraying my own religion. T.T Do you need a public speaking class cause I took fundamentals of oral communication which included group presentations? :/

You do, but you could get that waived since you took it. I will let you know, I am agnostic and I think the statistics are that about 85% of the people here are not catholic.

When folks tell you what you CAN'T do, that should be enough to push you to do MORE and do BETTER, or else you'll whine and get depressed and allow the words of others to define you.

My short story, had a GPA of 1.3, had to retake LOTS of classes PLUS some to boost my GPA. I got 4.00's when I retook my classes, even some how got on the deans list. Now my cumulative GPA was still kinda struggling. I had a cumulative of a 2.9 when I was accepted into nursing school. I worked harder and studied harder than any other student in that program because I had to prove to myself and my professors that I deserve to be in that program. I tell you this to encourage you :)

Forget what they say...keep pushing, keep striving to make your dreams come true. Don't you dare stop, KEEP GOING! You WILL see your dreams come true.
