I feel like I will be a bad nurse

Published

I am in my 2nd semester of nursing school. I've always wanted to be a nurse and I can't imagine being anything else! I had OB rotations and absolutely loved it! I'm now in med-surg 1 rotations and feeling very inadequate. I'm out of my comfort zone and feel like I won't be a good nurse. I am so nervous giving meds because I don't want to mess up. And I'm so worried I'll miss small details or that I won't be critically thinking enough. My nursing program is one of the toughest and they expect us to be very competent in our skills. I'm starting to wonder if I won't be a good nurse and should drop out?

Anxiety is normal. Nursing school is a huge challenge for most individuals. If you are nervous about skills, practice as much as you can. Practice in the skills labs and jump at any opportunity to do it in real life. Also, watching skills videos helps too. As far as meds go, typically your clinical instructor will need to be there with you when you give meds. Also, as long as you follow the 5 rights of medication administration you should be fine.

Knowledge is a great anxiety reliever. Fear of the unknown and all that.

Hi! ((HUGS))

Welcome to AN! The largest online nursing community!

Are you in an AND or BSN program? It really doesn't matter...nursing is tough. It is not like any other majors. Your friends not in the nursing programs just cannot understand why you study so much. My daughter is in a traditional BSN program and carries a 3.8/3.9 GPA... at LEAST once a semester she doubts her decision to be a nurse. I hug her and sometimes just brush her hair (as I have done her entire life when she is stressed) as she vents...reassuring her that every single nurse before you has felt the same at one time or another.

Take a deep breath...this too shall pass...I promise.
