should I feel insulted?

U.S.A. Texas

Ok...........I finally spoke to someone personally to a certain Dallas hospital. She said that because I've never worked in the US before I need to get a internship position. I don't know what that is all about so I made her elaborate. Apparantly...........I am ........to them..........just as if I am fresh out of school with no experience. She said the least amount of time is 6 months. But I have 8 years experience! I know I need an ORIENTATION, but I feel so insulted. I dont think this job search is going well. I want to go home. I dont want to beg for a job. I had THREE before I came here. Dam# that husband of mine for dragging me here....I wasnt desperate to come here ...do you see where I came from? Sun sand and sea!........ I am insulted and people speak to me like " OH..........you are not a US trained nurse?" They may as well say " OH MY.......HOW SORRY FOR YOU...........YOU DUMB UNEDUCATED CHILD"! Im gonna work at Walmart!. They may want me.........without a long internship period.

And the thing is...........I kept hearing stories about how much the US needs nurses and such. DONT BELIEVE THAT LIE!! For the amount of calls you have to make just to speak to a person and then they dont call back........they dont send an application............etc.

Im going home. Anybody want a husband? Im selling him......he is putting me in debt.

Keep searching cousin.

In my experience Dallas hospitals sometime take a long time to get back to people.

Someone will bite. Even if you HAVE to do an internship after two shifts they will see they are wasting money and will get a heck more outta you if they put you to work!

u dis tink I is be jokin!

I ain fa dis!!!!!

Chile ya can't leave da man jus so!

Mine, da preacher say "fa better and fa worser"

Dis da worser. Dat pracher didn't say nuttin 'bout "fa better or only if Bread could fine work!"

I will pray Da Lord send you work soon terreckly so you could have money to trow 2 hand in da asue back home.

People go with what they know. HR people, too.

You are an unknown to them. So, become 'known' to them.

Do you have a Texas license? Can you work in Texas w/ no strings? Most HR people see 'international' and they think 'paperwork'. That's not personal. That's just a paperpushing mentality - the less, the better and I get paid the same regardless. If they are going to have to go through tons of paperwork to hire you, then you are indeed going to have to look harder.

If, on the other hand, you are free to start tomorrow without all that paperwork - make sure they understand this.

You know - I look at this way - even though I have always worked in the US, when I go to a new facility or a new job, for at least 3 mos, I am cookin in somebody elses kitchen. I don't know where the pots and pans are, I dont know where the cinnamon is and I am not sure how this particular oven works.

If I were to go to another country to work, where the social customs and communication is diffferent (even if the language were the same - US and Australia for example or Britain) I wouldn't just be cooking in someone elses kitchen, now I'd be cooking in their kitchen AND trying to use their bathroom, bedroom and drive their car!

Nothing to be insulted by - I would expect other countries to want ME to be well oriented to the social aspects of nursing as well as the clinical. It isn't that you don't know what you are doing - it's just that you may not be completely and intimately familiar with how we do it here. Look at the internship as a great opportunity to learn new things and explore a new area in depth!

I agree............I need orientation............but I did my internship years and years ago! Orientation and internship are two different entities.

Anyhow..........somewhere there is a job for dumb ole me!! I know Walmart is hiring!!

I had been a nurse for 12 years - yet I did an internship when I switched over to neonatal ICU. I am so glad I did it that way too!! It was great, I learned a lot, and what I thought I knew would not have been nearly enough. Internships are not just for new grads here - they are for anyone making a move into a new area.

Perhaps you may want to apply at a nursing home where they will hire you with no strings attached.

OK???????? Umm I don't know what that is about......... but gerontology is not my speciality.

Please dont get me wrong. I want to be orientated. I expect that to last for a few weeks at least. I need that. But it was made clear I had to apply for an internship POSITION. Not go through an internship to orientate me. It is two different things we are talking about.

I totally agree with Gauge14IV. What a wonderful way to put things in perspective. I am also looking for a new position. I always get nervous when I first start. I will keep this in mind.

I do not feel like you should feel insulted. I believe that when they find out your experience level, you both will feel comfortable.

Sunnyjohn, I am helping to send BUNNY on his/her way.
