I FAILED NCLEX & have to go back to scho!!!

Published

Well I am full of questions and not sure where to turn! I failed my Illinois RN NCLEX and it's been 3 yrs from my original application date. So I have to complete 2 yrs of school in order to re-take NCLEX. I graduated in May 2014 with ADN. I passed LPN NCLEX and have an active lic. I also have an Associates Degree in General Studies. My question I guess is... Is there a way to go to school online and continue education? Maybe get BSN or NP without spending a small fortune! Or can I even continue without an RN lic. I just hate to repeat yrs of hard work when I could just continue to excel. I know many are wondering so I will add I am a 31 yr old mother of 5 who breastfed, was pregnant and had a c section during nursing school. Then after graduation life kept happening and we had a house flood and then later added child #5 do to a death in the family. We all know life happens! I just need to know where to go from here!!!

If Illinois requires you to go back to school, you have to go back to school. Maybe look for an online LPN-to-RN bridge, since you have an LPN license? That is if you can find a non-profit program... the investor-owned schools typically do cost a small fortune.

There are LPN to BSN programs that take 2-3 years. Have you worked as a LPN since your 2014 ADN graduation? I always find it hard to digest that a person puts so much time and effort into nursing school, but puts off licensing for so long. I know life happens, but seriously I don't get it.

Yes I worked full-time Eve shift LPN and it didn't work for my family. Then started working part-time and now prn. I took my 1st RN NCLEX in Aug after graduating in May and actually ran out of time. I know I do not know anyone other than myself who ran out of time! So I took it again in Oct and rushed through it and failed. Took a yr off. My large family had to live in a hotel for over 2 months waiting for our house to be livable! Then moved back in while till repairing our home and caring for our children. I went to work as an LPN in hopes to get back in the groove of things and I got caught up in a crazy work schedule working opposite shifts from my husband. I don't expect anyone to understand unless they lived ití ½í¸¢ Just needed to know if anyone has suggestions. Thank you for your input í ½í¸‰

Different states have different requirements as to how many times you can take NCLEX and how far out from graduation you can take it. I've heard of "old" graduates taking NCLEX in less restrictive states, then applying by endorsement back to their original state. I'm not sure how successful or complicated this would be and I have no personal experience. It's just something I've seen discussed on this site from time to time.

I imagine there would be a lot of variation with each state setting its own rules. It might be a good question for you to ask the Florida BON before you explore any further.

Is it possible for you to take it in another state. Also if you havnt already uworld is a really good tool to help with the NCLEX. Once you become liscence in another state. Become a traveler nurse and that way you can work in your state. Google states surrounding you that don't have an expiration

There are people who have been successful in school and have been through worst thing. Those are tough things to go through while being in nursing school. Keep the focus on where you go from here. Stay on topic with what you can control right now. There is no easy way to go about this. Find a school, try to get in it and do your best. Make sure you control what distractions you can while going to school. Good luck!

There are also RN to BSN programs. Check to see if those would count, and if they do, look at your local Community Colleges or state Universities. They will likely be the least expensive and RN to BSN programs are usually mostly online. Good Luck!

OP is not an RN, that's the point of the post. She went to school, graduated with ADN but didn't pass NCLEX.

I understand. However, there are options such as accelerated programs, and some RN to BSN programs allow starting without a license. That's part of why I suggested a local college where she could speak to an advisor about her best option.
