am I the only one?
Maybe I'm the exception but I have not experienced the whole nurses eating their young saga at the jobs I had as a new nurse. Sure there were a couple that weren't so helpful to me at first but once they realized that I was a team player and respectful of their experience they warmed up to me. I have a pretty thick skin anyway and figure that as with any job, class, driving down the highway etc. there will be some people I like a lot more than others but that is to be expected. I havent ever seen anyone else bullied like the rumors go.
I love my co-workers, with maybe only 1 or 2 exceptions. The other CNAs are wonderful and I feel like the nurses on my unit are the best in the hospital. They're not afraid or above getting in there and helping us when time permits and we usually keep each other sane on those bad days.
The nurses also know I'm in school and are really great about pointing out interesting things for me to either go see or listen to. They're awesome. :)
Yeah, I like my co-workers, too. I'm almost afraid to mention it out loud, though, because it might jinx me, like saying, "my, it's so incredibly QUIET right now"
They are courteous, punctual, competent and best of all, never play GOTCHA!!! They assume you know how to do your job, but no one has any animosity if something is overlooked. I feel quite blessed by this. :redpinkhe
I really like mine, too. About 95% of them. There are a few who like to sit around and speak in their native language in front of us and it makes me feel excluded. A few of them also -- well, maybe one of them is a bit too sullen at times towards me, but other than that, I really like our staff.
We are a new unit and I feel we've set the tone well with all of our new folks. I feel I can ask anyone a question and I will never be degraded. We are all fun loving and there is a lot of attempted teamwork. Doesn't always come through at times because we're ALL so busy, but we all try our best.
And lately a few of the folks I didn't like so well have left, leaving the ones I like. I'm really happy about that and feel our unit is getting better and better.
But, alas, the managers continue to be fools, keeping in place all the negatives about the job. In spite of their practices, we continue to be a good staff to work with.
God, if ONLY these managers knew what great employees they had and got out of them what is possible!
Thanks to all of you that wrote in with positive things to share. Of course we aren't going to love every one but it makes me sad to read about all the negative experiences without adding some of the better ones especially for lurkers that might be considering nursing. I think it is a wonderful career. Its darn hard work but the pay is good, hours flexible, possibilities nearly unlimited and I feel like I do make a difference most days. Doesn't get any better than that, imo.

I, too, like and respect my coworkers. I'm a new grad and worked in the same place as an extern. Each nurse and tech has been gracious, willing to teach and help in any way I have needed. There was even a "Graduation" party for several of us
I wouldn't trade any of them!
The only time a nurse tried to "eat" me, was at another hospital during clinicals. Fortunately, I'm a tough old bird and she couldn't choke me down. She even made the comment that "at least your program doesn't coddle their students. Student nurses from (another school) just go into the bathroom and cry." Good thing she got me before some my younger classmates.
