in all fairness, i almost entitled this " hysterical daddies", but realized that, though that is largely the scope of hysterical phone calls regarding people in labor in my experience, it doesn't , in all fairness apply to everyone or to all patients. that said, i just felt i had to share....other night ( and by the way, this is my fifth night in a row, one off and 4 on, so i am a little loopy and confused.:) ), i am at work and we have just ( thank goodness) transferred out 39 week twin multip mom with ruptured membranes. received another pt at the same time and couldn't find a doc. also had one nurse on call who was at home at the time..get through that mess, even calling the er to alert them to the fact that this was going to happen so they wouldn't be even more shell shocked than they were bound to be. doc located, twin family to specialty institution , call nurse in and some calm, until i answer the phone. hysterical dad on the other end insisting wife in labor . calm down i gently try to say. what???? she is in pain! ( i can hear her screaming). how far away i ask ( half an hour). has her water broken? how the hell should i know is the screamed reply. you know how it goes, sometimes it isn't as terrible as it sounds...what baby is this i continue. 6th! ok, now it is beginning to sound as bad as it sounds...i meekly ask, does she feel like pushing ( muffled sounds as he asks her) yes yes yes, i hear her scream. i sigh, then offer that they should put the phone down , and call the ambulance. he tells me he doesn't think so. she is more comfortable coming to us. i tell him even if they chose not to call an ambulance, they should go to a hospital which i know is only 5 minutes away. he tells me they will be coming to our facility and hangs up....i cannot believe it. i again call the overstressed er ( sorry cathy and all you er folk, you know how you hate maternity patients :) )...anyway, i also had the presence of mind to call admitting to generate some paper work because you just know they aren't stopping there.......set a table, get everyone mobilized and.....no patient. about 15 minutes later i get a call from the mother of the patient, who called her from somewhere on the highway where she was stuck with worsening contractions behind,of all things, an overturned truck. her question to me "what are you going to do about it?" i can hardly believe it and instruct her to call her daughter back and tell her to call 911 or have the hubby get out and grab ( well, not literally) a police person.....she says she isn't sure she can remember the cell phone number. i tell her i know that i don't know it....
finally the screaming mother and father to be arrive with the nervous state police and are rapidly assessed, settled and found to be, you guessed it, 4/c/0 and intact.....for goodness freaking sakes........and that was just part of my night....never boring in delivery for sure........just felt like sharing. would love to hear similar stories, or stories in general....
Actually, the twin mom was 30 weeks.

Recent night here - mother of "laboring" pt. beat her daughter to the hospital by a good half hr., in the ER demanding that the ER nurse call the MD (at 11 p.m.) to come in and be at the hospital when her daughter arrived. The ER nurses reply - I'm only the ER nurse - that would be a decision for tthe OB nurse, oh, and here she is now (Gee - thanks alot, I'll remember this). Daughter comes in, mother screaming in bathroom - ohmigod - she's bleeding (small amt. pinkish show). Then "Why aren't you puttting oxygen on her - they always put oxygen on me when I had my babies! (I'm thinking probably to keep you quiet). Then again - why haven't you called the doctor in? I explained that he would just tell me to call him later ( and not that nicely) and that he hadn't annoyed me lately, so I would try to let him sleep. Daughter is at this point 70%/3/-2, a primip. The mother continued in this vein right up to the change of shift delivery- as I was checking the pt., mother started yelling at me : You're holding that baby in - stop it and let the baby come out! (All that strength in my 2 little fingers!) By this point, everything was funny to me, I had a really hard time keeping a straight face until I could get out of the room.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha....I can just SEE this! And people think we in OB have easy jobs...In these days when the customer is alwys supposed to be right and made to feel special, I so often have to restrain myself as well....Are you SURE you aren't working with us????Thanks for sharing...:)

well i had one the other night come up here with about 10 people they were all excited and yelling, some keept ask me when is baby gonna come? mind you i have not even got pt in the room yet we are just in the hall way. I put her in obs give her gown people and s/o demanding we put her in the nice birth room since she going to give birth any second now. this being her first baby and all we know it coming fast. well i finally get her on the monitor, she has an occassional mild contraction, i examin her she is intact closed, thick and high. well i call doc then try to tell them she is not in labor and she needs to go home. there polite reply was to call me a moron and insist on seeing another nurse because i obviously don't know what i was talking about. well i got her another nurse she told her the same thing. we had to call security to get them to leave.
you just gotta love OB:)
OMG mark I have seen this SAME scenario play out many times in OB. You just gotta love these aspiring doctors and nurses out there that know more then we ever do.

When I first stumbled across this thread...I was trying to figure out if you meant Hysterical like CRAZY or Hysterical like FUNNY AS HECK! :-)
Awhile back, I was working triage. We get a call from a father in law saying that they are bringing in a mom by private car who is bleeding pretty badly. From his description of the bleeding, it certainly sounds like "pretty badly" is pretty accurate (left footprints all over the house! Positive Foot Sign!) Of course, they live about 30 min away. (We're thinking, "DUH! Why didn't you call 911!)
Well, we decide to rush around getting things ready for her arrival, upon hearing him close the call by adding, "Oh yeah...She has one of those PLACENTA PRIMAVERA things."
Placenta Primavera? Yuck! I can never look at Pasta Primavera the same again...HAHA!
(When she came in, she was indeed bleeding heavily, and was c/s shortly after...)
rofl OB4ME...Placenta Primavera...ewwww. Might make it easier to swallow.... But did you know, many people who give birth at home EAT a portion of the PLACENTA to (purportedly) stop pp hemorrhage? Yep, it's true. I would have pass on that one and get me the cytotec or hemabate. Sheesh!
