HUP, CHOP, Jeff, Christiana?

Published

I am relocating back to the area, and interviewing at these facilities. I have only been an RN for less than a year, so I'm looking for facilities/nurses that LIKE to teach. I'll be in West Chester, so I'm including Christiana in the mix, and I can commute either way. So far, CHOP and HUP have been the friendliest in simply arranging interviews, lots of attitude from Jeff and Christiana. HUP also offered the highest pay, CHOP and Jeff the same, and Christiana absolutely last, but I wouldn't have to commute to the city for Christiana. Your thoughts?

Thanks so much for all the replies!! I have narrowed it down, but I wonder, how do the city hospitals compensate for city wage tax? I don't understand how they offer the same hourly pay as hospitals which aren't in the city???

Amen on Christiana! Geez, who do they think they are anyway? Outdated, poorest pay, biggest attitude. I don't get it??

I used to live near CHOP, the neighborhood is fine for "Philly standards". If you are driving in, no problem. If you are taking the subway or train, it's fine during the day...but I never travelled on public transportation at night (after 11 or 12 pm). The thing with Philly is that you can have a few blocks of nice neighborhood, then a bad spot. I used to live in center city by the art museum, and in west philly around 45th and chestnut. I felt safe, as long as I wasn't out late at night. The person I know at CHOP commutes in from NJ.

Treehawk, I was originally going to drive in, but considering public transportation. Would University City be the stop?

They don't. And, you will probably have to pay for parking as well which is why many nurses left to work in the 'burbs.

Yes.

Yes.

Parking minimum $8-10/day about $120/month if FT were last numbers I've heard.

Non resident City wage tax:3.77%

That's the figure I was looking for - thank you, Karen!!

I still don't understand. I mentioned this to the recruiter (comparing city to 'burbs), and recruiter acted dumbfounded, like city wage was a new concept. Do people not call them on it?

Original salary quote to me was even less than I would have made at a hospital in the 'burbs. I asked why would I bother, if I could have hassle-free commute and higher salary? They mention the "prestige" factor of working at the big-name hospital and the opportunity to "go far". How "far" does that argument go?

Out the window...

I work at A. I Dupont in Wilmington, DE. If you are interested in Peds, I would consider it. I know a lot of people that commute from West Chester. Parking is free :) and there is no city tax. You can look at Nemours.org online and apply if you are interested. Good Luck!

I work at HUP in the OR, but not as a nurse. I do know that this is definitely a teaching hospital. I don't know how true it is but I've heard that you can make a little more working in the OR. Another thing their benefits are great and I love it.

How are the doc and surgeons in HUP's OR? I'm considering applying there but worried about putting up with their arrogance and hostility. Anybody able to give an opinion on this?

On this same topic - wondered if anyone could provide me w/benefit time frame for Jefferson (when do they start?). I am considering applying for a staff RN position at Jeff. Thanks so much.
