Hunter College GPA and NLN exam scores

Published

Hello everyone. I'm new to allnurses.com. I just wanted to know, for the people in Hunter's nursing program, can you please share your GPA and NLN scores for a guideline to compare what scores are expected to be admitted. Currently, my GPA is a 3.6 and I will be taking the NLN towards the end of January. I'm aiming for a 148-150 on the NLN. Share your scores please.

Hi DoGoodThenGo-

Thanks for your insight - it's always interesting to hear other perspectives. Out of curiosity, you really don't think the introduction of two new pre-req's late last fall would reduce the applicant pool for this coming fall?

It is going to depend on if anyone had advanced notice of the planned changes and or how many were able to take the new courses either last spring or summer.

Quite honestly HB's applicant pool is quite often so large it would take a *huge* drop off in applicants to make any statistical difference. IIRC before the change Hunter averaged something like >300 applicants for each of the 100 (?) open slots for their undergrad program.

Hunter's Accelerated Nursing Program only has 30 seats and 15 of which go to in state residents and 15 seats go to out of state residents. Super competitive. This program is basically open to the entire nation whereas the generic program is much more limited but with the new program generic program, it would open the application pool to more people especially college grads and career changers.

Soundsl like CUNY/HB is looking to make money as out of state residents pay higher tutition rates. Quite honestly if one was a CUNY/HB student I'd be very upset. There are clearly not enough slots for New York City residents but you are going to reserve precious space for out of state applicants? What is up with that?

Would love to hear the rationale behind that decision. Is it purely or partially for funds? Did they find something lacking in NYC/NYS applicants to the ABSN program? Also interesting is that for the first time in years HB's first time board passing rate dipped

Do know for some time CUNY has been complaining about the quality of NYC high school students arriving on their doorsteps. Even those that have the required 80% high school average and so forth to make it into the four year colleges aren't always ready for university level work. IIRC the head of CUNY even wrote to the head of DOE basically telling them to pull up their socks and stop graduating students who aren't ready for college level work. Think this had something to do with the vast amounts of remedial classwork required by entering freshmen at both the four year and community colleges.

I have been to 4 info sessions and have never heard about a quota for out of state students. In fact, I believe it is not allowed for state schools to have a quota for out of state students. I have only heard of them having a minimum quota for in state students since a majority of its budget comes from state taxes. I don't think that statistic is correct.

Also, at the info sessions in November, January and march it was stated that the new Pre-reqs affected the amount of applicants. They were not announced until October 2012 and since you can only have 2 Pre-reqs in progress when you apply in Spring, you would have to already have them, be done with all other Pre-reqs so you could take them Spring 2013 OR take them in Winter 13. They also changed the minimum grade for a Science Pre-req from C to B so a lot of people who were planning on applying no longer can.

There are further changes for Fall 2014 so I highly recommend attending an info session if you want to apply to Hunter and check their website often.

Anyone applied to hunter new generic program, (3 year.) .. If so can u post ur Gpa and nln score.. We all want to see where we stand... My is 3.9 and 130nln..

Specializes in surgical, geriatrics.

I had a 3.5 gpa, 150 NLN score did not get into the accelerated program (I was a Hunter student and did my prerequisites there). To have a fighting chance I'd recommend keeping GPA above 3.5-3.6 and getting at least in the 150s on NLN. Just be aware that they will still encourage you to apply even if you don't have a snowball's chance in hell of making the cut--I did two years of trying before I gave up and decided to go elsewhere.

No offense meant but you will never get any sort of bearing on "where we stand" without a large enough pool to be statistically viable. Out of the hundreds that are or considerng applying to HB only at best

DoGoodThenGo- are you applying to Hunter? Did you go to Hunter? Are you applying to any school whose threads you post on?

That last post was unnecessary. Glad to hear you are LOL while the rest of us are panicking over waiting for a decision.

Maybe you should leave the posting to people who are applying and students.

U guys might be correct.. But this is the first time hunterbusing opened this 3 year program.. Here aren't that many pre reqs.. But still it kinda a heart breaking knowing that there are about only 50 seat available..

I spoke to the nursing advisor today and she said that the applicant pool for the accelerated program is about the same this year as it was last year. ~200 applicants for 30 seats. :(

Whatawaste - did you apply for the accelerated program?

Yes, I did apply to the accelerated program
