Ok, I'll bite as no one else has responded and don't like to see a poster left twisting in the wind! *LOL*
Search around this board and you will find posts regarding Hunter/Bellevue's program. IIRC they like most if not all CUNY nursing programs have incorporated NLN or some other similar exam into the application process.
Admission is now based upon a mix of one's pre-nursing GPA ( and meeting other set criteria) and score on NLN exams. Again there are posts here and IIRC, one or two might mention what percentage of each is used to make up one's final "score" and thus getting into the undergraduate program.
HB has *always* been a difficult program and hard to get into, more so as nursing students chose to go for their BSN (HB is the only CUNY undergrad BSN program in Manhattan at the moment). If stories one has heard are truen students were coming out of the pre-nursing sequence with GPA's >3.8 and still had to cool their jets for a semester or two because they weren't admitted into the nursing program on their first application. Methinks the introduction of the NLN testing is a means to make the process more democratic.
As for volunteering and or seeking employment in the healthcare area, don't know if it makes a difference in terms of getting into Hunter-Bellevue, but can be a great asset later on when searching for a job as a new grad nurse. Being on the "inside" of any business usually gives you a step up ahead of others applying for employment.
Best of luck.
Volunteering and resume won't help you for Hunter as they don't even look at those type of things. They strictly go by grades and your grade on the entrance exam. So just push hard for all A's and you may have a chance. If you meet the cutoff GPA that's it and since they only accept applicants once a year, you will be pushed back an extra year, even with all your other classes done.
Getting seats in the pre-req sciences are also kind of like playing the lottery. Depending on your registration appointment, it's going to be a tight fit. You'd think they'd open more science classes but nope! That'd be too easy.
I am currently a nursing student at hunter finishing up my first semester. I was accepted into the program with a 3.6 GPA and an NLN score of 133. These are the only two things that administration looks at when considering you for the program. It was very hard to get into the program bu I can honestly say it has been so worth it. I took all of my prerequisites at hunter and I don't regret it because it definitely prepared me for the workload I have now. Good luck =)

I'm going to Hunter College next year (Fall 2010) and after two years of pre-requisites and core classes I'll hopefully be entering the nursing program there. I'm already looking into volunteer options at local hospitals and getting a part-time job in a health related work place to build up my resume but besides these two things what else should I be thinking of doing? And do I even need to be doing these two things? I've heard admittance into the program is extremely limited and difficult and I'm already nervous about it! Any help, advice, and just general info on the program and school would be much appreciated! Thanks!
