Human Growth and Development Course

Published

I'm starting this course next week. Anyone else taking it or anything that sounds a bit like it? I really am not sure at all what to expect but I know I'm about to find out in a big, fat hurry!!

Specializes in Maternity, quality.
We are covering 3 chapters at a time - it is organized well, but just jam-packed. We are currently working on growth and development during the first three years - birth to toddlerhood. I have a quiz on it tomorrow - yikes! Then we will be off to chapters 7,8, and 9 starting next week.

Good luck on your quiz! I'm sure you'll do great.

This week we started with the development of 0-2 years old children. My instructor has a new baby (6 month old) and he showed us the 3D pictures of his son in the womb. We could see as his son stuck his finger into his mouth. It was so cute. :yeah:

Our first test is in two weeks.

Thanks. I didn't do as good as I would have liked, but I passed, so I guess I will concentrate more on this next section. I am honestly focusing more of my time and GPA on my A&P studies than the HG&D, so I guess I need to shift things around a bit. :D

Thanks!!!

Ugh, I totally hear you!! The A&P is sucking the life out of me! lol I'll be thinking about you as you prepare for your next section. Right now I'm looking over my A&P and know I need to get to my other courses!

LOL! That's exactly what I'm doing. A&P books is on my desk & HG&D is calling my name, but still in my book bag. Maybe I'll dedicate some time to it tonight after the kiddos go to sleep. :)

Have a good weekend - I'll be back Monday. ;)

It seems to be getting a bit more relevant now in a lot of ways ... we are studying the Infant right now and the teacher seems to be openly saying the text isn't great every class. Umm .. anyway ... it's good because perhaps she will be helping us through a little more. We talked about the crisis of change a lot today.

Is anyone else doing a case study for childhood development? I am just starting some research for it but have only gone as far as glanced at two books and the text. I'm doing a 6 year old boy. Any thoughts or advice?

We have to write a case study or essay about events of our life that relate to dev. psychology. It is due sometime in November. I haven't even started.

Karen, why did you choose a 6 year old boy?

LOL, Katie .. because I decided to do my youngest son as I figured it would be easiest. Then again, I might change my mind once I get going on it. Ours is due in November also .. but I can't say that I've started it, only thought about starting and flipped through a couple of books. The course is kind of making me nervous ... I feel very unconfident as to what to look over or study for tests .. I'm sure she will give us a better idea soon.

I skipped out of doing any reading tonight. I have to quit doing that. I just felt so lazy and like my head is getting too full or something lol (after being empty for so long, I'd have assumed there's plenty of room in there!). So far I've kept up in A&P but I will have to really stick to my reading tomorrow morning. My dd and I just watched Gilmore Girls and a I watched another show with dh before that ..... hmmm tell me to quit slackin'!!

Anyhoo, I'll be up early in the a.m. Then in the afternoon I can type out my HGD notes from today's class ... and get to work on my A&P lab for Thursday. No rest for the weary (not that I am particularly) ... ok, babbling .. must be bedtime!

I will be doing a case study too. We have to do an observation of either daycare children, grade-school children or nursing home adults. I chose daycare children because the facility is joint with where I work, so it is handy. Ours is due in Oct., so I have done just the teeniest bit. I need to get with it though so that I have plenty of time to write up my paper and get it all nice 'n proofread. I have already observed the kids and taken tons of notes, but now I need to get a writin' before my memory fails me. :rotfl:

To all those who are sleep-deprived, I am right there with 'ya! I can't sleep much at all anymore and I am getting very tired. Oh well, I guess we'd better get used to it, huh? :)

Hi gals... had class last night. Turned in our first two journal entries, so will see how I did on those (things like that I'm never sure if I'm doing quite what they're looking for). We went through two more chapters on birth and the neonate and physical development of infants. Interesting stuff, though apparently the book and my instructor have rather different ideas on certain topics such as breastfeeding and use of anesthesia during childbirth. We have our first test next week, multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank, and one essay. She gave us the essay topics already, so at least I have some time to think about what I want to write. One is kind of an opinion-based essay, but of course we need to be persuasive, the other is more fact-based. I guess I need to figure out whether I have a strong enough argument to answer the first, otherwise will do the second. :chuckle

I also have my first A&P test scheduled for Saturday... except I'm out of town that day so will be taking it on Monday. What a start to my week!

kayel, no case studies in my class, just journal entries and a research paper. You guys are allowed to do case studies on your own family members? Hope you enjoyed your evening of vegging. We all need to take a break once in a while to recharge... and I would definitely take a break to watch Gilmore Girls. Except I'm in class when it's on :o

Happy studying all!

Add me to the list of those taking HD :) I'm taking it online, with the exception of the final & then we have to go to the campus.

We're using Human Dev. 8th edition by Papalia, Olds & Feldman. We had our 2nd test today (ch 3,4,5 & 6 conception thru infancy) & I made a 94%. I made a 72% on the first test (class avg 63%), but now he's posting study guides and following them to the tee on the test. He writes on his guides, "KNOW this" or "Don't bother studying pages 157-159". The test are all 50 questions, multiple choice, 30 minute time limit.

No case study here. We have a 4 pg. term paper due in Nov. that is to be written on any subject in the book. He said that you can turn it in early and he'll make notes & return it so you can correct your mistakes and resubmit it.

Overall I'm enjoying the class & wish they were all this easy!
