How do you wear your hair for work?

I just read the post about hair color and now I'm wondering how most nurses prefer to have their hair for work. I know there are a lot of places that require you to either have your hair put up or to be cut above your shoulders, so which do you prefer??

Is it easier to just get a short hair cut, rather than putting it up everyday, in your opinion?

Or, do you prefer to keep it long and just put it up?

I start school in May and I'm leaning more towards keeping a short hair cut above my shoulders because I look aweful with my hair up. Plus, every time I wear a pony tail my hair constantly slips out and it seems like it would be aggravating to constantly fix it...

So what's your hair do??

My hair is about down to my bra band now. I usually get it cut up to just over my shoulders but I've been thinking about going shorter. Now that I've read this thread I'm reconsidering.

My hairline is stupid so I look really bad in headbands and stuff. I usually just braid it or wear it in a claw clip and it's always parted to the side, so you can't see my ugly hairline.

I do a "sock-bun". Super easy, looks neat, and I don't worry about my hair all over the place either.

All you do is take a knee length sock, cut off the foot part and roll the remainder into a donut shape. Pull your hair into a ponytail, thread the ponytail through the donut, fan the hair over the donut secure with an elastic and then wrap the remainder of the hair around the bun and secure with another elastic. Takes all of 2 minutes to do and lasts 12+ hours!:nurse:

This sound cool, but I have some difficulty picturing the bold part. What do you mean "fan the hair"?

If you type "sock bun" into youtube, there's a couple really great videos that detail it. Really easy!

I prefer to keep my hair long and pin it up while I'm working. Its easier to maintain than short hair. I just recently cut it a few months ago, and I can't do anything with it until it grows back.

Just glad mine hasn't gone away. :)

low ponytail with one of those thin elastic sports headbands $5 for a pack at walmart. quick, easy, and out of your face.

I like the look of those bands, but they don't stay on my head well...probably because I have an abnormally large melon (one-size-fits-all hats? Don't fit. All of the kids got that from my dad :smokin:).

Long hair is definitely so much easier. Wash it, up it up in a ponytail and go! :)

I cut my hair a little over a year ago. It does look better on me than the long hair, but now I actually have to do something with it every day. I laugh when people comment how much easier it my be since I cut my hair; I have to get up 10 minutes earlier now!!

Chin-length bob, no bangs. I wear it this way for clinical and I'll wear it like that to work. I like the "idea" of a ponytail, putting it up, etc., but the reality for me is that my hair is too heavy and having it back in an elastic or bun pulls too much and gives me a headache. Same with a headband, to keep the sides back -- I can't take all that pressure on my head.

There is nothing worse than realizing shortly in to my 12-hour shift that I've secured my hair too tight, or that part of the clip it's in is crooked and digging in to my scalp. :uhoh3: I *set* my style with hairspray, etc (I always curl it, too, it's too straight/flat otherwise, and the curl helps it stay secure when pulled back) so I can't just take it down and redo it. It makes for a LONG, headache-y night when I make that mistake!!

Agree on the headbands....even the solid, "half" bands are just too tight after a while, the ends will dig in on the side of my head and WOW does that hurt after an hour or so. If my head was normal-sized (heehee) I think they'd fit fine, I'm just not that lucky!

Wow it def seems like the majority so far prefer it long and in either a bun or ponytail.

I'm not sure why but I always assumed most nurses would prefer their hair short. I know in my area if you go to a hospital or Doc. office you see 90 percent of the nurses with really cute short hair cuts. It looks like it would be easy to style the short cuts, but from what most of you guys are saying it's more of a pain in the butt

Hmm...I may have to reconsider getting that cute short bob cut I was thinking about:confused:

My hair is shoulder length. I put it up in a half ponytail. When I put the elastic on, I wrap it till it's almost tight. When I pull the ponytail thru the last pass of elastic, I don't pull it completely thru - which makes a sort of bun. Then I fan out the ends of my hair so it looks like a messy bun. That's for school. At work, I have it in a surgical hat. I wish we could get away with wearing the surgical hats out on the floor. They're great - no need for ponytails or anything else. Just tuck and go. Don't have time to dry your hair? Not a big deal - it's hidden inside the cap anyway.

Wow! Thanks! How come I never knew this sockbun secret!?! Amazing thing, really!

I'm gonna go try in out now :)

I am starting clinicals next week and heard my school is really strict about hair. I had a cute (but high maintenance) bob but I've been growing it out for the last year specifically for school. I hate my hair long. I plan to just twist it up and put it into a clip. That way I don't have to blow-dry, it is out of my face and doesn't touch my shoulders. I've been experimenting with the sock bun, but I can't quite figure out what to do with the ends. I really want to do a cute little pixie cut but if I don't like it I would be stuck with it until I graduate.
