How to study the Med's for NCLEX

Nursing Students NCLEX

Published

Hi, I was wondering how does everyone go about remembering everything about the meds that might be asked on the test? I just can't seem to get them down.

Do people tend to get a lot of medication questions?

Thanks!

Good question! I have all but given up on studying the meds. I figure that I'll just review what I already know. How are you going about studying?

I studied A LOT of drugs. However, only 2 or 3 of the many that I studied were on the test! It was very frustrating. I had a lot of medication questions regarding side effects, adverse effects, and health teachings.

You are never going to be able to guess which drugs you will get on your test. The best thing to do is no the common prefixes and suffixes that will give you a hint as to what type of drug classification it is...then answer based off what you know about that specific drug classification.

example: -olol is antihypertensive drug....always monitor BP and pulse rate

Although nearly all the drugs were drugs I've never heard of in my life...I still passed. *whew*

I studied groups of drugs but it did not help at all....i would say 50% of my NCLEX was pharm and I had not heard of most of the drugs addressed in the questions. In this case, knowing groups of drugs did not help...at all. I agree that you should work with what you already know and realize that it is impossible to know every single drug out there. Just remember that the NCLEX is requiring you to be a safe nurse who only has about 2 weeks worth of knowledge. Study hard....but realize shortcomings in drug knowledge is going to exist due to inexperience! If you get drug questions try not to get discouraged....good luck.

It scares me, how can I answer a question regarding a med that I never heard before? Can you figured out at least the generic name of the drugs in your test? Please give us a clue how strange or rare are those meds on NCLEX

Unfortunately on my test I had a lot of drug questions and only knew two of the drugs. The others, I just read the answers and made an educated guess. It seemed like the right answer was the one that would be most dangerous to the patient, at least that is what I went by. I would try to stay away from answers that were common among most drugs, like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.

I bought a tiny book that helped a lot. "Mosby's pharmacology memory note cards" it has cartoons and nemonics that help you remember drug names or at least drug categories.
