Plz. advice all the informed nurses to a foreign med. grad.

I am in CA too, I am IMG, I became a nurse, I got my ADN from a CC, I am currently working as a PHN. I want to pursue with my masters and became a FNP but I found very difficult to get in since most programs look for clinical experiences as a nurse, some of the programs require that the sciences course being taken no more than 5 years at the time of NP application, so I am retaking A&P, Micro and so on. So, I need some advice and information where I can aim my direction, at this time I am waiting for the resuslts of my application at SDSU and if I am not accepted probably I will try to apply at UCDAvis they do have a dual program for NP/PA and they do consider different requirements for IMG.

    Accelerated Online BSN Program

K Campos, Thank you very much for your info. This is was I suspected when I was trying to get a new grad position here in SD. OMG how hard it is to get even a job interview. Anyways, I had to take a job as a PHN here in SD. I didn't try to get a job out of So Cal, for several reasons I can't move out of town, although I would like to do that just to get the experience that I need. My plans now are either to get the BSN or to enter in a MSN entry level. I have a BS and I would like to pursue with my career. I had different expectancies when I graduated form the nursing school and now with this scenario I am very disapointed with myself, I try to encourage myself and think "At least I have a job". I wish you the best, enjoy your time in Baltimore.

    Accelerated Online BSN Program

K Campos, I heard this is a good program. Where you able to get into a New Grad Program? are you in SD area? I am a RN with ADN and it has been very difficult for me to get into a new grad program, I graduated in 2007 and I started working in Public Health but I really want to get the clinical experience in acute care, which now is almost imporsible b/c the recruiters told me I am not a new grad anymore but I don't have the acute care experience to apply as a staff nurse in a hospital. I was thinking to enter in a refresher course at UCSD but I am not sure if the investment of time and money will get a job at any acute care setting.

New Grad RN-->No Jobs, Then what?

My understanding is that nurse recruiters work for the facility recruiting nurses to work for them. It seems like they are the first level of screening before your application goes to the HR. Any ideas out there?

    Entry level job.. Help! Help!

Thank you for asking. Yes I did, I got the PHN certificate since I have a BS and I completed a community health nursing class. I am working as a PHN so far. But my desire to work in acute setting looks pretty discouraged. I feel so sad. I have a vast clinical experience overseas but not in the US, so it doesn't count. I wanted to pursue with my career and enter in the NP program, but I can't b/c they ask me for at least 1 year of acute care experience. I have taken every single certification that I can, PALS, ACLS, BLS, NRP, Fetal heart monitoring, next CIC; it doesn't count. Right now I need extra money, my husband lost his job, he is EE and so far no job opportunities for US. Although I like my job but I don't have too much opportunities to advance in my career. I don't even get a job interview. It seems like my applications are invisible; it is so frustating.

New Grad RN-->No Jobs, Then what?

I am in the same boat. No experience in acute care, no job in hospitals. I am working in pulic health but it doesn't count as nursing experience. I am not longer a new grad, so I don't qualified for a new grad program. I have all of those certifications, BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, fetal heart monitoring and pretty soon will add de CIC (Infection Control), those doesn't help, even to apply for a Infection Control Nurse, they ask for CIC certification but also for experience in acute care. I think that as soon as my resume is read and the recruiters look at my cero experienced in acute care, they don't even look at the rest of my resume or probably is something wrong with my resume that makes it look so disgusting for the recruiters. I don't know what to think. I am so depressed and discouraged. Altough I am working, I need to complement my job with the nursing experience in acute care. My husband was fired looking for a job. If I don't get a RN job pretty soon. I am thinking to apply as a warehouse clerk, janitor at nights, seriously, no a joke. It is very discouraging and frustating.

    Entry level job.. Help! Help!

Hi Aleena23, I just wanna to know how you are doing with your new job. Did you received the orientation? If so how long is gonna be? I am still looking for a job as a nurse. Any tips or advice, it will be greatly appreciated. Also I was thinking that it might be something in my resume that doesn't look good. Besides, my lack of nursing experience in California, I don't know why I don't even get a job interview. I am so discouraged.

Going rate for New grad in S. Cali (OC)?

Congratulations NewRN2010 for your new position. I am a 47 years old RN with ADN too with a bachelors in science, I graduated in Dec 2007, took NCLEX in July 2008. I have looking for a job as soon as I graduated from a SD CC, but I didn't have any luck, I had to pay my bills and since I was working in public health while I was attending to the nursing school the local public health department offered me a job as a PHN, I started working as a PHN in Nov 2009. I like my job but I miss to work in the clinical setting. As soon as I graduated I 've applied for every local new grad program, but no luck. Time passed fast and suddenly it was more than a year that I graduated so I was told by nurse recruiters that I was not longer a new grad and all of the jobs require at least 1 year of experience in the job that you are applying for. While looking for a job in any hospital I was taking several certifications ACLS, NRP, Fetal monitoring, PALS (scheduled) trying to be ready for the GREAT opportuniy, but nothing so far, no even a call for an interview. I would like to hear any advice from somebody in this forum. What should I do in order to put my foot at the door to get a RN entry level position in a hospital? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
