How do you sign?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I am a nursing student in my final semester of nursing school. I am greatly looking forward to finally becoming a nurse. I was wondering how many of you sign your names:

Jane/John Doe, RN, BSN

Is this normal? Is it something big headed students do the first few months and then stop doing? I was just wondering! To me... if an MD signs:

Jane/John Doe, MD

Due to what can be taken as his pride in his degree, why not nurses?! Call me naive, but I'm going to be proud to be a nurse!

Specializes in Critical Care, Postpartum.
If you're going to use your degree its:

Your Name, followed by your degree, followed by RN then any certifications you hold.

Reason for your degree before your RN = the degree is conferred and can not be taken away whereas (hopefully not) the RN can be taken away.

That makes sense because I've seen RN, BSN and BSN, RN...

Specializes in Oncology; med/surg; geriatric; OB; CM.

I just sign M.Mylastname RN.

I knew someone who asked during our nurse extern luncheon (I had precepted a 3rd going into 4th year nursing student) if there was a differential for nurses. The moderators explained about PM & Night shift differentials to her. She then replied "oh no I meant is there a differential for someone who has their BSN as opposed to 'only' their RN". That raised hackles up all over the room since most of the preceptors started out as ADNs or diploma nurses & went on to get their BSN or MSN.

I heard from my nursing student after her graduation that this same snotty person insisted on signing M Bighead RN/BSN on all her charts until her Nurse Manager (who was currently going through a RN to BSN program told her "you know we all take the same boards---just sign M Bighead RN".

We all do take the same boards--some of us took them on paper, some on computer but as the old saying goes what do you call the top student and the lowest student in a nursing school who passed their boards--REGISTERED NURSE!!

Just sign Y Name RN. It takes up too much time & space to add all your letters after it.

Enjoy your career!!:nurse:

i occasionally sign j.doe, rn outside of work, but it is strictly an accident. the only exception to that was when my little sister was young. if i took her somewhere that paperwork had to be filled out, i would sign rn after my name and now one ever questioned my ability to sign for her.

Specializes in LTC.

I sign my name B. Roses LPN...Outside of work it's just Butterflies Roses.

i renewed my driver's liscense once on a day when i was doing lots of other errands, then planned to go to work. the woman doing the photo part was known far and wide to be a real crab and not to be crossed for any reason.

finally! it was my turn to have my picture taken and then sign affirming that i was indeed who i claimed to be. three shots later, she decided the shapshot looked enough like me to be legal, and i signed. i heard not her usual "next!" but uncontrollable laughter instead. instead of katherine middle initial last name, i had signed that plus msn rn as my job required.
