How to run a Study Group?

Published

I am in my first year of nursing school and would like to organize a study group but I am not sure of the best way to go about it and how to make it most effective.

Any suggestions? Simply go over NCLEX questions and share rationales?

Thanks in advance.

When I run a study group we mainly go over any difficult concepts and break them down. We also go over practice questions or case studies too. Going over rationales is very important also.

What I don't like in a study group is staying off topic, goofing around , and not coming prepared. Study groups should not be designed to re-teach anyone, its meant to reinforcement. Good luck

We set rules up front - no talking about personal things or ranting about teachers. No ordering food (ok to bring personal snack). We pooled resources and bought several different review question books then assigned topics to each member. When we met we got down to business and "taught" each other certain concepts. Others were free to step in and ask questions or we all looked things up when someone brought up a point we did not understand.

We kept the group to 4-6. More than that it is hard to control. We did not allow drop-ins. All of our group made high grades. I think it was because we were more mature and more focused.
