How Rude!!!

Nurses Relations

Published

Do you ever wonder how people can be so stupid and rude??

Today I was visiting my mom and decided to run over the local hairdresser and get a quick trim. This guy was there whose daughter graduated from high school last year. I do not know them very well just small town stuff. Town of 400 and everyone knows everyone. Anyway his daughter is going to school to be a nurse so I asked him how she was doing. (He knows I am an RN because I had him mother as a patient, and he asked me if was still working at that certain hospital). He says, "I just don't think being a nurse is very impressive. Having MD behind you name says a lot more. I can not believe I have to put her through college just to be a nurse."

I was totally dumbfounded!!! OMG!! Yeah having president in your name is impressive too. It is not like he is anything spectacular either. Never went to college, took over his dad's farm.....not that there is anything wrong with that, but that comment!!!!!!

Oh well, at least you have a title behind your name. What does that hairdresser have?

I don't think the hairdresser was the offending party... wasn't it another customer?

Licensed Cosmetologist/Barber is what it says on the license that is to be displayed in a conspicuous place. Certification is what you receive when you complete a cosmetology program, you receive licensing when you take and pass your state board.

Title does not mean squat if the behavior is crappy, i don't care if you are a VP at a bank or shovel poop out of the chicken house.

I dealt with crappy attitudes when i was a hairdresser, a lot of people with the "holier-than-thou-you-are-here-to-serve-ME" crap, and quite honestly, i have respect for anyone who can take that better than i did, because i never have been one to hadle superiority complexes from overly spoiled people who have too much time on their hands to drum up methods of being a hemmrhoid on the orifice of life..

Disrespect in any form, from any career path, from any person is completely uncalled for. Like i've said before "it all starts with ME."

I once heard a man saying his son had a learning disability so he was going to go into the nursing program because anyone could do that. Boy, did that son ever get a surprise if he ever even got that far which I doubt.

My parents, knowing both of us are in health care, always talk about the "service" they received at the hospital. They still call everyone there "nurses". So agrivating that I can't even educate them.

I do understand the frustration you feel when people can't distinguish one healthcare worker from another, but it really isn't any different than when someone mistakes a roofer for a carpenter, or someone working in electronics from and electrician or a kennel tech from a veterinary tech. I'm sure we have all made the mistake of calling someone something which they aren't. It's simple ignorance and shouldn't be taken too personally.;)

We need to take responsibilty for education buffoons whenever we can...Keep your cool, don't take it personally....Enlighten them...I am now in LTC and have lost count of the number of family members that honestly believe that their loved one's doc is in the building daily or sees their loved one evertime they sneeze. And that we have a lab and radiology dept in the nursing home...

I would have taken that personally. Who is he to say what nurses do anyway? Has he ever been in the hospital for a long time to see the variety of work is done? We don't all become nurses just because we can't get into med school. I get really defensive when people say I should become a doctor rather than a nurse. They are two different disciplines and I chose nursing. It is more rewarding. A lot of people are ignorant, just remember that. Especially if he said that to you already knowing you were a nurse. I would have walked out of there without paying him.

I'm glad I'm not his daughter. She certainly isn't going to get any support from that ignorant jerk. It never ceases to amaze me how misinformed and ignorant some adults are. Anyone who has finished nursing school knows exactly how difficult it is to become a nurse and what a major accomplishment it is. Try to ignore comments like that..

I think in this bad economy some people are jealous of nurses. In my city the biggest section of the help wanted is jobs for nurses. When I started school some of my friends commented that I would be making so much money after I became a nurse.

This rude man is really missing out by not being proud or supportive of his daughter. I wonder if it would be better for him to say "My daughter is pursuing a degree in finance because she will earn alot of money, of course she is not happy because she wants to be a nurse. But what is really important is not that she is happy, just that she fufills my goals for her."

Don't take it to heart. We are taking about a man and his little girl.

Besides think of it from a layman's point of view----

DR. nurse

Who gets more respect?

You and I both know who really runs the show and it ain't the MD.
