How old is too old?!?!?

Published

Hi everyone. I am 46 years old (or young, however you want to look at it) and decided last year that it was time to go back and finish something I started back in 1984. Now, none of my credits are any good so I'm truly starting over. I was all excited last fall and took my Psych 101 - aced it. Then chickened out and decided I was too old for nursing school. I still went ahead and took a full load this semester - aced all four classes. This has been a dream I've buried for a long time. Any thoughts on older students getting accepted to a program and then even being able to find a job after graduation? Or just any encouragement...discouragement?

I just graduated a couple of weeks ago, and I graduated alongside many students in their 40's and up. I think one person was closer to 60. What I, as a twenty something, really enjoyed about this was having friends going through the same things as myself who had more life experience than me. Those in their 40s and 50s had a lot more perspective than I did. I was able to learn about balancing school with work and personal life, how to set goals for myself, and that anything is truly possible no matter what your age is. So, I just want you to know that not only do we in our twenties like being with you guys, we learn a lot from you about the person we want to become. Go for it and good luck!

HECK NO!!

I'm 55 and will be graduating next May:yeah:. There is another woman who is even older than me, at 66. Most of the time I'm older than my instructors! We have kids in our class out of high school, most are older people still raising their children, and others are second career types.

I feel that the only time it's too late to do anything is when you are in your grave. Don't worry and go for it!

Hi,

I was 40 when I graduated from nursing school. The more you use your brain the better you feel. I also have had no problem getting a job and after moving to another state. I work three 12 hour shifts and I am tired but the young girls in their 20's are just as tired as I am. Your right, your as young as you feel!!! I still think I'm 29. Good Luck

Hi, there is no way you are too old. I graduated nursing school 10 years ago with honors. Then I chickened out on taking the NCLEX. I just took it for the first time this past April and passed. :yeah: Always go for your dreams and dont stop no matter what. God bless.

I always say "It's not the years...it's the mileage" some cars make it 300k I plan on being one!

I am said this before...you are as old as you feel...some days it's 36 some days 106. All depends on how busy my night shift was. I have also posted that you are never too old to follow your dreams. Whether you continue with your nursing studies, graduate, and join the ranks (welcome) or you stop; you will still be the same age 3-4 yrs from now (however long your program is). Please continue your journey to become a nurse.

I say, "GO FOR IT!!!" Last week I started my fourth semester out of 5 for my BSN. Our adult students are my favorite classmates. I'm 22, but we have 6 students that are over the age of 30, I think. They are our star students, and my biggest source of encouragement in the classroom. They succeed because they really want to be there. Please stick it out. I really think you would love it, especially if this dream has stayed with you all the years. Nursing school is the most difficult but funnest thing I've ever tried to do. 46 is not old at all. Get in there, and show them what you're made of!!! You can definitely do it. And if it's any encouragement, my godmother put her three sons through college and then went back herself and has been a labor & delivery nurse for years and years now.

Go for it!!! I went back to school at 46 and am now 47, got my LPN. Just graduated from LPN school in Nov. 2008. I am now working in a large hospital, just started last week with a mentor. I was told that they normally do not hire new grads but since I was more " mature" she was making the exception. So do not let age hold you back. If it is your dream then go for it! I am now working on my ADN and hope to have that completed this time next year, from there I plan on getting my BSN. By that time I will be almost 50. So what it is just a nnumber and I want to keep on learning.

 Never too old for a dream. I got my nursing lic at 43, only mind wasn't a dream of being a nurse, long story. I felt a range of emotions going back to school but I found that I really enjoyed it and found the surroundings to be very amusing. The 20 yr olds who probably never took a book home, the young pretty, skinny things that probably would have passed no matter what, entertaining at my age. But the friendships, the proving to myself I could do it , there were many days I thought I was crazy and I couldn't take it any more but it was so worth it. With nursing I have been able to do so many things I wouldn't have been able to. Travel for one thing, knowing you will have a job when most are questionable and knowing you can be any kind of nurse you want to be, how many people can say they have that many choices in their careers? GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!!! take care and good luck:yeah:

You are not too old to do get the education you want. I was 32 when I obtained my BSN and I thought I was old then. Time will pass no matter what you do and you are younger today then you will be tomorrow or next yr. or five yr. from now. I teach psych clinicals for an ADN program and I have had students in their late 50's, and believe me they are not dull or unable to learn or retain. They have a multitude of life experiences that will make them into competent, caring, and compassionate nurses. You go for it. It's your life, experience it!

I just graduated with my LPN and I'm 46 going back in Jan to finish and get my RN you can do it....Just believe in yourself -its all about how bad you want it!!!!GOOD LUCK

I graduated at 52 years young 3 years ago. I went straight into ICU. I have also worked Emergency. Also passed CCRN and CEN. I start an RN-BSN program in June and plan to get a masters in Critical Care -Trauma. You are going to get old anyway , you might as well do what you love!
