How often did YOU see the school nurse?

I can honestly remember seeing the school nurse on just 3 occasions:

1. 1st grade - My Mom suspected chicken pox but was not sure. Told me to go to school and ask my teacher to see the school nurse because "my Mom thinks I have the chicken pox." That went over well !

2. 2nd grade - I got slammed in the back of the head by another student doing a "penny drop" on the bars. I saw stars and staggered dizzily back into the school with the help of a friend. Fell asleep with my head on my desk. Woke up and promptly vomited, luckily into a trash can. Sent home. Never went to a doctor. Had planned sleep over that evening.

3. 7th grade - First period began the day prior. I just felt all kinds of weird.

Never saw the school nurse again.

I don't even remember having a school nurse, and I have asthma!

We didn't have a school nurse in my K-8 school. Our health/PE teacher who was also a secretary was the one who took care of us when we were sick. I remember several visits in 2nd grade because I used to get really bad headaches. She would put a cold paper towel on my forehead, loosen my hair, and call my parents to pick me up. When I ended up getting glasses, I never went back. In HS, I only went to the nurse once because I didn't feel well (but still not sick enough to have to go home) and knew I could whine my way out of school with my dad lol.

The only time I remember even seeing the school nurse (a fearsome sight, 7 feet tall, dressed in crisp white from her starched cap to her perfectly shined shoes. Hey, I was 6 and it was the early 60s, cut me some slack lol) was when we lined up for our immunizations.

A lot. I have dealt with chronic nosebleeds since I was three. I would quietly get up from my class, grab some tissues and head on down. Once it stopped I would go back to class. No fuss, always calm and collected. I was definitely a frequent flyer because of it though.

I never set foot in a nurse's office as a child, not once. I went to Catholic schools in elementary and private middle and high school. Once the administration brought a nurse to each classroom, introduced her. She went to a little office where she would stand on the doorway, I never saw any students in there and she was gone just a few days later later and was never replaced. None of my classmates had an inhaler, no epi-pens they did not even exist yet, no one received medication. When we got to middle school some girls took tylenol or something along those lines that we carried from home in our purses for cramps. We didn't think of sickness. If we fell, I don't even remember band aids. Band aids were very, very rare. I did sports and I would go to the bathroom, rinse the area, maybe with soap and make the area clot with paper towel as I walked or limped back to the courts. We were incredibly healthy by present day standards. This really bothers me. I have been a clinic assistant and a substitute school nurse, and the children I have seen in two states over the past 20 years are very sick, by comparison. I am sure there were children with some problems, maybe even big ones, but it was so rare. We did not say things like "I have anxiety or panic", we did not interrupt a teacher to go to the bathroom, unless it was truly an emergency. Not out of fear, but out of respect. We did have mandatory Physical education daily and almost everyone participated in after school sports. We did not have any special education as they were private schools with about 500 students each. I have been amazed at how unhealthy young people are both physically and emotionally presently. I always felt that schools should hire lots of nurse to come and wholistically address the needs of the kids. Some of them are emotionally hurting so badly, they have so many needs that I am sure affects performance. How can a child that is homeless make good grades?

In grade school, quite a bit. I was prone to ear infections until about 2nd grade. And once this horrible boy in my class cut my finger open with a pair of safety scissors. And then a few other times because I was sick. Middle school-never. High school-I never even knew where the nurse's office was.

I was a Ff in 1st grade .Until my mom told the nurse to send me back to class.

I don ' t remember having one in Junior High .

Don ' t recall going to see her in High school

I went to the "nurse" twice (I think they were actually parent volunteers and not nurses). Once in kindergarten when I had a stomach ache and I was given a Dixie cup full of straight Coca-Cola syrup to drink, it was awesome. The second time was when I was older and I just needed a pad.
