How much does WIA pay toward your degree???

I am starting a Practical Nursing program on January 11 and I was just talking to my WIA counselor and he told me that WIA will only pay $10,000 toward your degree and I would be responsible for the rest. I was wondering if any of you that have WIA grants have heard anything different. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. :nurse:

I can't imagine 10k not covering an lpn program. It is enough to cover my rn program. Also you can still get the pell grant.

I don't qualify for grants anymore because I have a B.S. degree and the program is slightly more that $10,000 because it is offered at a private catholic college and they have a bridge program for your RN available at the school.

My WIA grant pays $4000 for my LPN program. But I also have a Pell Grant, so I don't know if that makes a difference.

They paid $4600 torward my LPN program.

I just picked up my paperwork and they will pay for tuition/fees plus books and uniforms...possibly more. I am also getting Pell Grant. As of right now, the anticipated payout will be almost $5000.

Thanks for all the responses. I just wanted to know if they were putting a cap on the amount given for the WIA grants.

From what I understood about the Michigan's No worker left behind act, the cap is $5k, and all year I've been hearing that they may not possibly be giving all $5k that was promised because Michigan is in a financial crisis. So far I've received the $2500 for the first semester, and the last $2500 for this semester is still 'pending', but it seems like they're going to grant it. I think there is a cap by state; but then again it could be capped federally... not sure.

WOW! $10,000 is a lot of money! That's more than my program cost all together. How much more do you need? Like some of the others have said you probably will be able to get a pell grant. When it comes to paying for school you should weigh all of your options.

Who ever your counselor is, they were telling the truth. Cause before I moved back to Cali, I was going to do the LPN program at Delta College, and my counselor told me they were going to pay that same amount for my program. I wished I would of stayed there because out here in Cali I'm paying $29,500 for my program , and the WIA out here is bone dry, so I couldn't apply. Compared to what I would of payed in BR-$20,600. I try not to think about it everyday, otherwise I'll cry. :bluecry1: I miss BR, can't wait to come back. :heartbeat

Interesting thread!! I had never heard of WIA before so thanks for the post which helped me learned something new too!!:)

I just wanna know how can the applicant qualify for the WIA program? I'm from the low income family and qualify for financial aid so is it possible I can also qualify for WIA or not?

You could possibly qualify but you need to contact your WIA agency BEFORE you enroll in your program (Here it is the unemployment office).
