How much in student loans do you have?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi everybody. I'm trying to get into a nursing program and right now I'm getting my pre-reqs done. My question for everyone is this...how much is normal to take out in student loans? Most of the programs in my area are pretty much full time programs so I wouldn't be able to work full time any more. What did other people do or what are they planning on doing? I'm just curious. I'm a 39 year old thinking about a career change but I don't want to still be paying off student loans when I retire!! Just kidding...I know there is a time limit for student loans:wink2:

I have over $40K in student loans. My wish is to leave this earth still owing something on them because that is the only way to get loan forgiveness. If I still have to pay my $190.00 per month when I retire, I might just have to default or go back to school and apply for forbearance.

I like the idea of loan forgiveness but I'm not sure I want to die to get it!! How long do you get to pay off student loans? I thought it was 10 years or so.

I finished a diploma RN program owing absolutely nothing, not a penny. The hospital paid off every cent of my education. However, if I had not signed a loan forgiveness contract, I would have owned $5,000 after grants. Not bad.

The amount of time is dependent on the amount. Once you owe a certain amount (can't remeber what it is) you can opt to pay it off over a longer time period. I think mine is 25 years.
