Today, I received the list of required textbooks for my first semester of nursing school in January. My initial reaction was to scream and faint. Then I woke up, remembered why I'd fainted, and fainted again.
But eventually I came to and decided to bite the bullet and ordered all TEN of my required textbooks. I bought them all used, mainly from Amazon, and paid about $420. I didn't think that was too bad.
Nonetheless, the cost of textbooks is enough to make anyone's head spin. My family and friends can't believe it when I tell them how much money I budget for books....
Anyone else care to share?

I know it was over $1000 the first semester...that was 2 semesters ago for me and I've since spent less than $25 on books. Most school give you pretty much everything you're going to need in the first semester.
So relax:) This is probably the most you'll have to spend on books.

The first semester was the worst by far. I think for 3rd semester it won't be more than 200.

I still don't know how much it's going to be, but I bet I'll have the same reaction as the OP

It doesn't appear that we will need any more for 3rd semester. We had to buy them all for 2nd semester.

Our books were close to $700.00 in our bookstore and I bought all new online for about $350.00 for first semester. Many other students bought online and from 2nd semester students used and got all 6 books for about $200.00. BIG SAVINGS....
The school got wise this semester. As we were smart consumers (and poor students) and we totally cut into their profits they "bundled" and shrink wrapped our books for next semester and made it a school policy NOT to give out the ISBN #'s as in previous semesters for us to purchase our books in advance. They have included a mandatory disk that can not be purchased separately so we are forced to buy this package. It is about $375.00 for the package. Needless to say there were many unhappy people. I am going to buy my package as soon as I can , but, there are many that are going to wait, get the ISBN from someone else, order books online and try to burn the disc. I may not be happy with the situation but that's too scary for an old timer like me. Hopefully we will not need much more for 3rd and 4th semesters.

I am surprised (though I shouldn't be) that the bookstore won't give out ISBNs for their books. The store here does. Is this common at other colleges? It's obvious they are trying to stifle the used book market. I bought my books used online for the next semeseter ($65 for books that would cost $225 new) because I'm tired of the overpriced, new-edition-every-year, bundle-stuff-we-don't-need ploy that college textbook publishers and bookstores use against college students.

I spent a little over 400 dollars for my 1st semester. Next semester (2nd) I already know I will spend over 800 bucks for 'em. I have to buy my uniforms too and those are over 200...plus other random stuff that we need.

For spring 07 I bought $85 of books. I got them through barnes and noble online. I used their discount card and 15% and 25% off coupons. Last semester I bought $250 of references for my PDA and spent $150 on books. Yikes! I love my books though. I never sell them back. I use old semesters' books for careplans and references all the time.
