How much of your cohort did you "lose"?

Published

So my school has two campuses, small community college, and we have about 85 people between the two campuses who are part of the ADN class of 2015. People have told me that nursing school loses sometimes 25% or more of the cohort before the first semester ends! Is this true? Did you experience this in your class? I just don't understand how that happens. You work so hard to get in, you pay so much, and you don't see it through. Why does this happen? I'm not judging anyone who this happened to, I'm just trying to understand the phenomena. Opinions?

We began with somewhere in the 40's and ended up with somewhere in the 20's. Some left the program. Others failed and were washed back to other classes. One or two went part-time.

A few students were academically unprepared. Most had financial/child-care issues and failed out because of that. Too many lates and absences. If you can't find the time to study, you're going to fail.

Some students just gave up and lost motivation. Stress at home; stress at school.

They couldn't handle the steady pressure.

Things happen.

We will begin starting the fall (our second semester) with 13 less than last semester. We had a total of 141 students last semester so we've lost about a tenth of our class.

We started out with 34 in first semester. We are about to enter our fourth and final semester and we are down to about 20-22 I believe.. But, we have picked some up along the way that failed classes and had to retake them too. So when I go back in a few weeks we may have more if some people ahead of me failed and have to repeat.

Wow, this is NOT enouraging!!! I think my biggest issue will be the math so I will be going to the tutoring center before school even starts!! Fortunately I don't have the childcare issues, and hopefully won't have the financial issues...... but I do have elderly parents. *sigh*

Good decision, lorirn2b. People who rely on denial or who don't go proactively to get the help they know they will need are more apt to be in the leaving group than the staying group. Good luck!

My school started out with around 40 and lost 18 in the first year. The thing is I could have called at least 12-15 of them after the first week of school. They were the partiers, the ones that ALWAYS complained about the work load (or tried to get test questions thrown out), the ones that never asked questions in class, or didn't take notes. Don't get me wrong some people do not need notes or to ask questions, but when you do all of that combined you are going to have issues. Thankfully I do not have extreme amounts of bills to pay and can get by working part time, without children. I however, refused to give up my life, I enjoy moderate time with my boyfriend, family, and doing activities like going to eat or to the movies. Do not upset yourself before school even starts, school is individual to everyone. The key is to be as organized as possible and to get help BEFORE you start to sink. Study whenever you have time and do not put it off, if you know you want to go to the zoo on sunday then make sure to set aside a good amount of time Friday and Saturday. Kudos on recognizing a weakness and getting help early. Good Luck!

My cohort is 22, we graduate in September (woohoooo!!!!!). One failed a course, and repeated, and is now a term behind us, another delivered her baby very early (was due during break) and had to miss most of the same term, and so now she is a term behind. One left to transfer to another program.

So now we have 22. We recently took the ATI Predictor, 9/22 passed. The lowest score was a 27%. More than half of the class failed. There has been ABSURD amounts of cheating, and dishonesty among several classmates. I'd say about half of my class should have been kicked out of the program LONG ago, they've only been passing due to all the cheating they've been doing. But Administration says they don't have enough solid evidence to support kicking them out. So all of the people that should have failed out over the last 2 years are going to get stuck in limbo right at the very end. And they deserve every bit of it.

You hit the nail on the head here.. all the people that have been having problems are the ones that party, are lazy, show up late, dont follow instruction, don't pay attention in lecture, complain, and expect everything to be handed to them. After failing an ATI test, one said... hahahah pfft... who has time to study for that crap??? Literally.... this was said.

They all said something like, "I always wanted to be a nurse like my mom/auntie/cousin/Cherry Ames,"

Cherry Ames! That made me laugh out loud! YES, or Sue Barton! Thanks for a good laugh!

Sad that administration cannot do anything about it, fortunately with that attitude I seriously doubt that they will pass the NCLEX or get through an orientation.

which school??
