She was 6cm, it will probably be a while.....this was day shifts reports, little did I know, la dee da here i come in the room and we all know that infamous grunting sound, yup you guessed it, COMPLETE oh a +3 station, multip, mec stained, no delivery table or suction set up, the damn chart wasn't even done! I hate to gripe, but this is ridiculous, here i am running around like a chicken with my head cut off, doing a "not on my shift" delivery, fortunately everything was fine. BUT, how many times have we all heard that? Be kind to your co-workers, we all hate being left with a mess!

They crack 5 cm and I do up a table, it has happened a few times too often for me.

I would have at least helped you set the room up at 6cm with a multip. Jeez.

I would have definitely stayed and helped you, esp if I had been her nurse for the last 8-12 hours.

I always stay over for change of shift deliveries. Also my delivery tables are always set up @ 5cm at least on a multip. Sounds like the nurse just wanted to get out of there fast.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I of course would have stayed for the delivery, and been your second nurse, done baby vitals, and THEN made a break for it. Oh, yeah, I would have apologized for calling it wrong too.

All that under the assumption that you would help me if it was reversed, that's just good for the patient and good for each other. I don't get the point of cutting feet out from under each other in a crisis.

Hmm, this happened to me. As a patient. Way back in the days (three years ago :) ) before I was a L & D nurse. I was G2 P1. My nurse checked me, said "You're 7. I'll call the midwife." I climbed out of bed and said "I HAVE to go to the bathroom NOW!" (HHMM, does that make anyone think twice??? lol) I proceeded to stay in there for 20 min until my friend (an OB tech) DRUG ME, against my will :) back to bed. The midwife came in as I was walking back to bed. I put one leg on the bed and let out "the grunt" all good labor nurses KNOW means the baby is coming and pushed her out (in the caul) as I was climbing into bed. Where was my nurse? OH, she went home EARLY!!!! ARRGGHH

Actually, at the time I didn't really care. I couldn't believe I pushed her out so quickly after pushing forever with my first.

The moral of the story is: I am EXTREMELY careful to have everything ready for the shift following me AND I (of course) stick around for imminent deliveries.

I now work the shift following this nurse you can bet I check on her patients right away!
