My program is rather small with only 170 or so students. I don't know everyone, obviously, but I know of at least four people (and rumored at least six more) that have either left the program or have flunked out. It saddens me that people are forced to sit out the rest of the year and wanted to see just how common or how uncommon it is to lose people so easily.
My class started with 36 and I wanna say we have 24 now, although its rumored that 2 will not be returning next semester to pursue other adventures. One decided that he'd rather be a physician if it took this much knowledge to be a nurse (LOL) and the other decided on vet school, I loved her but I don't think she loved me... or people in general. About half of them flunked and the other half didn't make it to the end of the semester because they either couldn't stand the heat, or something came up.
At the beginning of the semester I was told to look to my right, and left, and hope that at the end, I was the one still there. I didn't believe them at the time, but I'm starting to.
My ADN program started with ~300 and now going into the final semester we are down to 126 (that is including 15-20 re-admits per semester that failed out of the previous years semesters and rejoined the following year). Yikes! I think they are working on making it more difficult to get in to the program so the weeding out process isn't so drastic. The NCLEX pass rate is good though...mid 90s.
I just graduated in December, took boards Wednesday (and Passed!). We began our 2 year ADN program with around 98 and graduated with 56. My school has a 98% 1st time NCLEX pass rate. We lost more than 42 but we gained several retakers throughout the 2 years. I couldn't be prouder of myself to have made it through while working full time and taking 3 prereq's with my Nursing courses that first year. I thought I wouldn't survive, but guess what.... I DID! And finished with a 3.4 GPA! IN YO FACE, Nursing School!!!!
We are a relatively small class of 36, and everyone gets along well. We just started our 3rd semester last week of our 5 semester BSN program and we were all shocked to hear we lost one of our guys. The young man's Dad has been very sick with cancer and from what I understand, he took time off to be with him. He is however, scheduled to start back up in the fall.

My class started with 26, we graduated with 10. It's so sad, our nclex pass rate is at %100, but I think we lost some great nurses!!
