I'm new to school nursing and was wondering if some of you could let me know how many students there are in your school and about how many kids do you see a day? This information was never gathered, as I am the 8th nurse in 7 years and I have so much to learn/do/complete/etc. One of the things I'm trying to get a hold on is the number of students who come through, some 3-4 times a day repeaters and what is considered the norm. I am finding it almost impossible to do anything else and bring home work every night and on weekends. But high volume and taking home work may be the norm. I'm just trying to figure everything out.
Any feedback would be appreciated! Thanks!
For 650 kids we see 70-100 a day. We have some children coming 70-80 times already this year. We get visits asking for sneakers because their sandals will get dirty.
I have our music teacher having students recite my mantra during fall and spring, " flip flops are for pools, not for schools"!
Late to the post and I haven't read all of the comments yet.
I had 472 students, and I see 35-40 (or more) a day. Most of these aren't necessary visits, but in our sue happy world, a teacher doesn't want to deal with the wrath of an angry parent because their snowflake wasn't sent to the nurse for something that happened at home 6 days ago.
Your school has had 8 nurses in 7 years, this should tell admin. something. (Sorry if this has been addressed already) You need to make rules and let the staff know that this is how things will be done. With frequent fliers I call home after the second visit. Some teachers have even told the kiddos "You get two visits today, that's it!" (For the ones who visit TOO many times). Usually parents aren't aware that this is happening and will put a stop to it.
I also look at a pattern in times for visits for my FF's, if they are coming at a specific time everyday I call the teacher and ask what is going on during that time and will involve the guidance counselor if needed.
Don't take your work home! You deserve home time just as much as anyone else. It will work out!
They are on site. There is a lot of bias toward the teaching staff as well as every parent request is approved. If their child doesn't like public bathrooms, they use ours. If they like our coats or sweatshirts better than what mom sent, we provide it.
Regarding coat/sweatshirt situation....I would be sending them to lost and found and tell them to find something they want to wear from there - not using my very limited supply.
400+ PK-4. Including 4 T1DM and other daily meds, 65 visits/day. No help. This is better than in the past though. Working with new supportive admin. I chart everything then run stats to make changes. Example: 127 cough drop requests since March 1. Yea that's gonna stop shortly so I can get some statutory things done.
This is insane... I would lose my mind

Wow is your administrator school based?
I would think they would want them in class learning.
