How many of you had a different career/education before becoming an RN?

just curious b/c I went to school for psychology & right now I'm in graduate school for social work. I am thinking of switching to nursing before finishing up my MSW b/c I'm so anxious to earn the title of RN and work in the hopsital doing clincial work!! :uhoh3:

I'm just retiring from 20 (almost 21) years in the Navy. Just starting school and looking forward to earning that same title that you are.

I have spent 25 years in EMS. I decided to "come in out of the cold" about 3 years ago. Nursing was an almost "given" for me.:p

I spent 18 years in factories doing machinist work until they closed the doors and now I will graduate in May from an RN program.....one door closes and another one opens.....thank my lucky stars every day now...

I was active military and also a waitress before I became a nurse. I think you will find MANY 2nd or 3rd (or more) career nurses out there. It's so common.

I graduated with my BS in Sociology in 1995 and am now in an Accelerated BSN program.... will be 35 when I graduate... :)

Eight years military as a medic, orthopedic technician and then journalist. I spent a few years in the civilian sector as a reporter in radio, newspapers and TV. When I had nothing more to say, I went back to medical....

Got a B.S. and M.S. in chemistry. Had to get a nursing degree to be admitted to anesthesia school. I graduate on 30 April.

You may have needed to get an RN to get into anesthesia before, and it still opens up more opportunities for anesthetist training, but it's not absolutely necessary.

Then why are you getting your MSW? Don't waste any more time (not that having an MSW is a waste). See how much of your previous undergraduate courses wold apply to your basic pre-requisites for a BSN. Good luck!

I was a teacher before becoming a nurse. I was 35 when I passed the borads. Now I am old!! Nursing was the best move I ever made! I love it!
