How long does it take to receive RN license in NJ?

U.S.A. New Jersey

Published

I am a Registered Nurse in Florida. I plan on moving from Florida to New Jersey this year. I registered tonight on the NJ BON website, so I could read the application procedure and requirements. I am just wondering how long this process takes? Does it only take a few weeks to receive a NJ RN license? Or does this whole process take several months?

Did you call the BoN? Passing the NCLEX in another state is not eligible for an endorsement until the original state issues you a license. Previously you stated the NJ BoN was asking for your license information but you state you only passed the NCLEX. If you only passed the NCLEX you need to apply for a license by examination and fulfill all requirements (CES, proof if English language proficiency , etc) then have the first BoN transfer your passing NCLEX result to NJ BoN. NJ now requires a valid SSN per the application

NJ BoN was considering changing the process for endorsement of IENs due to people jumping states to skip requirements such as CES & English language proficiency (basically having the same requirements as license by exam to endorse in addition to having a another US state license to endorse) but the minutes and legislation page haven't been updated so I don't know if that passed. You need to contact the BoN. The application linked above includes

hi nurses!!

from my experience,

if you applied online, paid the fee, did the NURSYS, and got the fingerprinting results,

GO TO NJ BON

I live in new york, but i drove myself to NJ BON, in Newark and got my license number

on the spot.

there's no need for wait or calling the NJ BON.

everytime I called NJ BON, each representative had told me a different thing.

just go there and get the license number in the office.

How long after you had your fingerprints did you wait to drive to the BON? Got fingerprinted yesterday, NJ BON received my prints today they told me to call back in 10-15 business days. I live in south jersey so I am more than willing to drive up to Newark for this number.

Since it's a state and federal check, presuming you did digital finger prints it's at least 2 weeks for the report to get back to the BoN. I know someone in law enforcement that was able to confirm it really does take 2-3 weeks for the detailed report to be returned as they check prints, name, SSN and DoB against both SBI & FBI databases to ensure nothing is missed (think Charles Cullen). Most are successful at the 3 week mark. At least there are no legal holidays in the interim to delay you further!

It had tons of things that weren't checked off so I called the BON and asked them to walk me through how I can get them checked off. They basically explained that all I was actually missing was board approval and once I get that, everything else would be taken care of. AKA: I had sone everything I could. They gave me the whole speech about how I had applied only a month ago and my application was complete for only about a week so it would be another 2 months, minimum.

Long story short, I drove to Newark that same day and walked out 10 minutes later with my license in hand.

About how long did you wait after everything you could do was done? My fingerprints have been in the system & checked off since July 21. Everything that is not applicable to me is not checked off including board approval. I live in South Jersey and am willing to drive to Newark.

Saw your post and am thinking about driving to Newark to get your license. Also applying for NJ RN license by endorsement. Last thing that needed to be completed was the fingerprinting/background check that was done on July 24. Called the BON and they told me it'll probably be another 2-3 months and to call back in 10-15 days.

For those that have gone directly to the NJ BON to get their license. Can you talk about what you asked when you got there? Did you ask them if they could print the license that day, or did you call ahead to say you were coming to pick it up? Was there any information you additional information that you brought, like your other state licenses, ID etc? Thanks for reading!

I'm in the same boat as you! Prints have been done since July 21st. Please let me know if you get more information about going to the BON. Thanks in advance!
