At the hospital I work at they have both 8hr & 10hr shifts, no 12hrs shifts.

We also have 8, 10, and 12 hour shifts. I'm sure every facility is different.

We have primarily 8 hr shifts with a few 10 hr and 3 12 hour shifts thrown in.

In our hospital, We work in an 8 hour shift and a 2-3 12 hour shift. =)

Our OR has 8, 10, & 12 hr. shifts. Then there's "call". Your shift could be up to 24 hrs. then. There are laws that say you shouldn't work more than 16 consecutive hrs., but that doesn't always work. I remember one Labor Day weekend that I was on call. We worked 38 hrs. straight. We couldn't get anyone to come in and give us a break. My circulator and rhe anesthesiologist finally stood together and said we couldn't safely do any more surgeries until we got some sleep. I was exhausted. We took a 6 hr. break, then did 2 more cases. What a weekend.

Do you guys rotate those schedules, or are they set. I'm starting in the OR after I take my boards in January and was wondering if I get to choose my schedule after I get off of orientation. The OR I will be working in does 10 and 12's.

Where I am, those with less seniority are rotated through mid-shift (11a-730p)and evening shift (RNs and STs), supposedly for a total of 5 off shifts per 4 week schedule. Other than those 5, they are day shift.

In the OR ? Are you kidding ? If you're lucky you get to go home after 8 hours. This happens maybe one day/week. Most days I work at leat 9-10 hours and if I don't "volunteer" to stay late, I get the big guilt trip from the lead nurse (NAZI) of the day. If you are on call... you're stuck there until the surgeons stop bringing call cases in. I've worked 29 hours straight and got no sympathy or relief from anyone. Most days I'm on call I bring a back pack and expect to work at least 16 hours straight.
