I have been looking all over CA for places to start working, I am a new grad and have my heart set on NICU nursing. I am actually traveling to Long Beach in about a week to visit Millers Children's Hospital. Does anyone have any input on how it is to live in long beach?? expensive? stuff to do? weather, how are the beaches there?? How hard would it be to commute from a more southern beach, like maybe Huntington?? Perhaps as you can see my main two goals, NICU and a nice beach!

i love long beach. i work literally about 3 blocks from millers/memorial. i'm there about 3-4 times a month. it's a great hospital. as i'm sure you know, they are doing a major expand to the children's hospital there. long beach is right next to orange county, and la. miller's is about 10 minutes from the beach, 10 from knott's berry farm, and about 15-20 minutes from disneyland. i live in oc by knott's and it takes me about 10 minutes to get to work. long beach like most large cities has its really nice areas and its really bad areas. i hope this helps. let me know if you have any other questions.

I like Long Beach, though I don't work in the city. It would be fine to commute in from Huntington Beach or Seal Beach. I wouldn't live near the hospital. LB definitely has some not so nice areas, but the waterfront is nice (anything on Ocean Blvd).
If you wanna live in LB, i'd agree with Fergus, that there are some nice areas down by the water or in the Bixby Knolls subset of Long Beach. However, they're quite expensive. Lakewood, Cerritos, Buena Park, Cypress, Stanton, Garden Grove, Seal and Huntington Beach, and Los Alamitos are all nice areas very close to the hospital.
Thank you both for all of your help! I can't wait to see the hospital this week!! :w00t:

The nicer parts of long beach are good, I live in lakewood. they'd be good options.
You could also go south of there a bit and check out CHOC (childrens hospital orange county) the water quality tends to be a bit better down south (except when it rains- then it sucks everywhere LOL. Huntington Bch has had mysterious high bacteria counts at times the last few yrs but I think it's better overall.)
Hoag Hosptial In Newport should fit the bill- gorgeous area, (more expensive) fancy pants hospital. I assume they have an NICU...
Thanks for your post, actually Hoag was my first choice and they dont' take New grads in the NICU, they tried relentlessly to get me in their urology floor and i just wasn't diggin it. CHOC i have also applied to, and they seem very nice, pay however is less than at Millers...but i am still keeping my option open there!
HOAGs nicu is really small too. A friend works there and really dislikes it because it's so small that she gets floated routinely. I believe CHOC has a lot higher differential for night shifts than MCH, so don't go by base pay alone.

I lived in So Cal all my life (Huntington Beach) I'm sure you will love it there. Frankly, the rent's are so out of control there, buying a decent house in a "good" area is next to impossible, so we moved to Arizona, where you can still buy a house, with land no less! You should look into Huntington though.

Try looking at Westminster, CA, which is very close to Long Beach. True, it's not at the beach but from there, the beach is about 10 minutes away.
Living at the beach is a luxury (translation: very expensive). Live a few minutes inland & you would be able to still live in a comfortable setting for less.
SOO I got the job at Millers and loved the hospital!! ...one question though, they are making me sign a contract that says i will work for them two years after my one year of training, so essentially three years....is that commonplace in cali?? Anyhow the other thing is now i need to find a SAFE place to live....i've been looking at apartments and then i look that the reviews of cockroaches and cars being stolen and now i'm scared! Do any of you know good apartment buildings either around long beach, seal beach, huntington and or anything close to millers. THANKS A MILLION!
