  1. I agree, separation is pretty uniformly a bad thing.
  2. I'm a doula and I recently had my first experience with a dr that came into the room, saw me there and proceeded to rip my client a new one, in their native language (picture me being clueless here) "I don't allow doulas..." they played dumb and I stayed. the nurse had no problem with me at all and was willing to back me. This mom did not tell the Dr. I would be there and I did not know it (Nor do I ever ask). It was a very uncomfortable/unpleasant situation, and surely affected moms labor. The next time he came in he threw another hissy fit. He was a very controlling OB but she was pretty much stuck with him. No doubt she worked him to get things her way. By the end he told me "it's not my cup of tea, but that you do good work" I need to send him some business cards:lol2: I sure wouldn't go into that situation knowing about it. To me to play 'friend" or sister or whatever is unprofessional. You are a professional doula, research shows you are a help, it's the clients call... don't hide, Hold your head up and be a doula
  3. wow. can anyone say whistleblower TV?
  4. I tried to get the mom to file a complaint. I thought after some time went by she would. She is quite clear on what happened, but didn't. I did write it up from my point of view and I still have it. I'm not sure where to send it. I'm very tempted to send it to the medical board. I was very powerless in this situation. Let face it, I was the doula that brought the client in pushing (by the clients own choice, because she was sick of her dr's "stuff" I think.) The baby came out 10 min after we got there. he didn't have time to do the episiotomy and was angry about that. (he'd been telling her for weeks if she didn't have one she'd have a fistula..) I didn't see any bleeding and at the time It happened I was so SHOCKED I gave the look to the nurse, the dad, the dr. and let mom crush my hand. NO one said anything but the one nurse said 'she's just asking for a minute" It became instantly clear if I said anything the doc would take it out on my client. he did bring out the lidocaine to stitch her tiny tear, so I think it could've been worse... This dr was so horrid I swore off him and that whole facility. I refuse to go there again and I do tell moms why. I do wish i had tracked down that nurse. I've come up with other blunt /track stopping sentences to say in a similar case, and I will consider physical action if I should ever see another horror like this. I'm no hot head either, but the consequences of not stopping this does weigh heavily on me. I hope as a nurse I'd have more power.

I'm no expert on PKU, but I've been told the CA state now uses tandem mass spectometry & aparently the test timing using this method is not as sensitive as it was when they used the previous method (Guthries assay) but it is more accurate and can look for more metabolic errors. Any time after 12 hours old is ok, and it doesn't matter what or how much they have eaten, Any earlier and it must be done again. http://www.dhs.ca.gov/pcfh/gdb/html/NBS/WhentoCollectSpecimens.htm Guthrie assay: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guthrie_test Tandem mass spectometry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tandem_mass_spectrometry#Tandem_MS & the economics http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/117/5/S1/S280
  6. your grades in your prereqs? or your whole overall GPA? Honestly that scares me. I've got A's in my prereqs and am just starting an LVN program. my GPA overall isn't a 3.0 (misspent youth, friggin hard major) Am I shooting myself in the foot doint LVN first?- not that I really have much choice right now due to family reasons... That would suck.

  8. I did, & then for good measure Dr Ogre stuck in a 10" hemostat with guaze and swept it around her uterus "to make sure he got everything". Barbaric is right! Could a nurse do something (report the ob?) in a case like that?
  9. I've had some psycho professors lately. Everyone is complaining, some to the adminstration, dean, dept.heads, lab instructors etc and It's WORKING. things are getting better, teachers were not asked back for this semester, and they even made us an extra class to improve our grades over the break! I'd never seen anything like it but this place is very responsive. I think they know when many many students are proving their case it's not just a case of a few whiners. COMPLAIN!
  10. not me, get yourself an anatomy coloring book instead- the fat and goo makes stuff harder to see, not easier, and the smell,, I swear those chemicals are a danger to any living thing..
  11. I thought i'd be safe and take one at a time, as it turns out i think i could've done Anat and phys (seperate classes) at the same time. Now i have to take Micro in 5 wks in the summer. :uhoh21:ewww. there is a girl in my phsyio class that's taking A, P, Micro, English1 and I think she said nutrition all this sem. I couldn't believe it. :uhoh3:! but she's doing it.
  12. Personal experience is great, but is there any research on the accuracy of AFI/? It seems (i could be wrong) that this is one thing that has come into use without much study...
  13. I'd look at the ROP regional occupational programs LVN programs before I shelled out that sort of cash for a private school. dont; get discouraged, jsut start your prereqs. inch by inch it'll be a cinch besides you're young. I'm 36! yikes.
  14. lol. i remember laying in the tub, belly sticking out, with water in my belly button (what was left of it). I could see my pulse shaking the puddle with every beat LOL. I thought it was funny/weird, never thought of it being dangerous!
