How do you keep in shape?

Nurses Stress 101

Published

I wanna buy the Nike Fuel Band (http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA512VC/A/nike-fuelband-small) for workouts. But seeing as I'm a nurse, i wanna know how much calories im burning walking around the nursing home i work in. Given that I eat healthy during the day tho haha.

What do you think? How do you keep in shape?

I used to wear a pedometer when I first started out. I think I would walk around 5k a shift. Granted I work in a huge unit, park sort of far away from my building, and I was a new nurse so a lot of time I was just wandering around looking for supplies. I still think that's pretty significant! That doesn't take into account all the standing, lifting, turning, chest compressions, et cetera. It beats a desk job for sure.

To stay in shape I run. I've been a long distance runner since high school. It's how I stay sane.

I keep in shape by getting some form of cardiovascular exercise at least five days per week, for 45 to 60 minutes per session. In addition, I watch what I eat and attempt to limit my intake of junk and high-calorie fast food.

I work 12 hour nights, so my shifts end in the morning. After my shift is over I'll immediately head to the local 24 hour health club for a workout before going home. Exercise keeps some people up, but it helps me sleep more soundly.

Round is a shape.

I do my best stretches when I reach into my bottom desk drawer for some of those awesome rosemary-black sea salt caramels I have stashed down there.

I just bought a used bodybugg. I am overweight..oh who are we kidding, I'm into the obese category and I'm sick of it. I burn an average o 2500-3000cals a day according to my body bugg, and I am working on losing weight by make sure I'm getting more active, eating less(and healthier). If we are just sitting at the nurses station(I work L&D so sometimes we are busy, sometimes the board is empty), then I'll get up and walk the unit(which is from my unit to OB/GYN clinic to Nursery/NICU. I try to do that hourly...not only to get moving, but I hate just sitting somewhere. I'm also working on getting more usage out of my treadmill and just going outside more with the kids(hiking, etc).

I power walk 5 days a week and do strength training (including weights) 3 days a week. I've seen how older people who have been largely sedentary move (or don't move) and I don't want to be that person. Also, there are many other health benefits of exercise. Last but not least, it feels good to get my blood flowing, my respirations and heart rate up, and to work up a really good sweat. :)

I do exercise DVD's 30-40 minutes per day, 5-6 days per week. Over the last 6 years I have established quite a collection of them -- and lost 52 pounds.

all good suggestions!! i bought the Nike+ fuelband. gonna try it out. thanks guys! :D

I run! It's hard when you're exhausted and you just want to go home and plop onto the couch, but it's such a great way to destress. I'm in a better mood, sleep better, and I'm more conscious of what I eat. I try not to beat myself up when I can't work out as much as I'd like or I planned. Running is the choice for me because it's about efficiency. I burn a little less than 100 calories/10 minutes. It adds up!
