  1. thank you everyone. i can't say exactly what got me terminated but what i can say is that it was a reoccurring problem; i didn't show any signs of improvement on my part and i will definitely take this as a learning experience and do all i can so i don't get fired again.
  2. I'm sad to admit I have been terminated from my job today. I also regret to say that this is my second termination. My question is, where in the Nursing practice act can I find information about the amount of times you can be terminated as a nurse before you lose your license? How much does severity of the termination matter? Thank you.
  3. I work full time 40/hrs at an acute care setting in a nursing home. I applied at the same time to another facility, but they only had PRN. I agreed to take both jobs in case I didn't like the other. Here's the thing, at my full time job I have every other weekend off with wednesdays and fridays off. meaning I get off Friday if i work that weekend. I get wednesday off if im off that weekend. I've picked up at least two days a month at the PRN job cuz they really needed nurses. Lately, my full time job has been kinda hectic and I keep saying no every time the PRN job needs a nurse. I mean how many times can I saw no before they fire me? How many hours does a PRN "have" to pick up? i handle 16hrs at the same facility but 8hrs at one job then 8hrs at another sounds insane. Plus, i'll be late. then it's not a full shift pay. Maybe i'm not understanding what it means to be PRN? or im just not ready to handle two jobs. what do i do as PRN?
  4. While searching for jobs, i applied to multiple facilities. i was hired by one facility that offered a full time 3-11 RN position. and another job i applied to offered a PRN job. how do i handle this? what happens if the PRN job calls me in when i work my 3-11 shift. luckily the two facilities are not far from each other. what the rules? how late can i be to my PRN job? what if i'm getting off my PRN 7-3 shift and have to go straight into my FT 3-11 shift?
  5. Dang. the nurses at my work play dirty. omg I'd been having a terrible week at work this past week. I'm an RN at a nursing home. There were signs that show I may be terminated any day. So i wrote up a resignation letter that I planned on giving to my DON on Friday 3/21. I find out at the beginning of my shift she wasn't in that day and she doesn't work over the weekend. The next step was to give it to my Supervisor but she took a short day, so I gave it to my weekend supervisor. Monday morning was hell. Like I had meetings with families that threw me off my routine and I was killing myself to try and catch up. At the end of the shift Monday, my DON wanted to speak with me. I'd bene struggling at work lately and she decides now to terminate me. I brought up the letter of resignation that I gave to my supervisor in her absence. My DON said, "what if i was out for a week? if i were you, i wouldn't have trusted something as serious as this with anyone but the DON." so im freaking out in her office like, "im a new new nurse. this is literally my FIRST job, you hired me straight out of school with no real experience. i don't know these things. I thought giving it to the supervisor in your absence was enough!" She just kept saying I'm sorry it doesn't matter. you are terminated as of today. I sat there kinda shocked.. and she tried to make me feel better by saying she'll try to talk to the administrator if he'll turn my termination into a resignation because i wrote and dated my letter of resignation before the date of my termination. I just dont know what to do now.. i have applied to other nursing home and rehab centers but i hope this doesn't hinder my chances of being hired... My employee handbook says "the advance notice is to be submitted in writing to immediate Supervisor, DON, or Administrator, and will be able to replace you without undue inconvenience to our residents and your fellow associates." I did what was written in the handbook. why doesn't my resignation matter? my work has some shady staff.
  6. I'm a new RN (since March 2013) working in a nursing home. We;re in our window and I'm excited and nervous at the same time. I know for sure they'll watch me do a med pass. I already have a patient in mind. But I also have three G-Tubes and two Trach patients, one of which is a total care. I just recently acquired a contact precaution patient. Some of my coworkers said to do all the hard ones first. I should follow company protocol but 7-3 is crazy busy, i'd love to read up on all protocols.. How can I prepare for state? Any suggestions??
  7. all good suggestions!! i bought the Nike+ fuelband. gonna try it out. thanks guys!
  8. I wanna buy the Nike Fuel Band (http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA512VC/A/nike-fuelband-small) for workouts. But seeing as I'm a nurse, i wanna know how much calories im burning walking around the nursing home i work in. Given that I eat healthy during the day tho haha. What do you think? How do you keep in shape?
  9. Dude, same here! I know you're supposed to leave work at the door and vice versa, but when I get home, I can't help but think, who should I give meeds out to first and in what order? ANYTHING can happen during med pass. one of the LPNs told me to act as one of those things will happen during the med pass. And maybe that'll help speed things up. IDK. Okay, so it's not uncommon for a med pass to take forever. Got it. I'm not trying to be the fastest med-pass nurse, LOL. I'm just having trouble finding my judgment on when to take a break off the floor. It seems crazy for me to never have time for a break in the three weeks I've been on my own cart. But I guess that's a nurse's life story, right? Like how nurses will be lucky if they find time to pee. Another thing I have trouble finding time for is charting the ones who need it q shift. I have three. We chart by exception at my facility. it doesn't seem bad, but the other day PT wrote in like seven new orders that I needed to transcribe. My staff manager keeps reminding me YOU CAN'T DO EVERYTHING ON YOUR SHIFT. Somethings you have to pass on. I'm the kind of person who will bend over backward for my patients. I feel bad passing on my tasks during MY shift to the next nurse. I could go on about an LPN who didn't accept the task I gave her. I'm an RN, so, um, nope, I'll keep this comment short. And passing meeds by memory. Yep okay. Bad me. Won't do it. Basically, I just want to try and finish med pass so I can find time to do important RN things, discharge/admit/readmit residents, charting, etc., and also LEAVE ON TIME. I stayed 4 hours after my shift one time to finish charting. My work doesn't like paying me OT, LOL. But thanks for the help, guys! I hope this weekend will be better.
  10. I'm a new *new* nurse, fresh out of school. Just passed my boards in march. This is also my first job. Ever. I work the 7a-3p shift in a nursing home. We have a front and back hall. I'm in the back hall. It's not as busy as the front. I've done clinical in a nursing home before, but I was only looking after two residents. Now I have 25-30 residents. According to the state, I have an hour before nine and an hour after to pass meds. But in all honesty, I give out my first meds of the morning at 7:30, and I don't finish til about 130. I have about 25-30 residents with meds ranging from 1 to 15 pills. I'm aware of the factors that affect med pass. I.e., emergencies such as falls or incidents, a resident taking more than 5min to take meds, a family call, a doctor wanting updates, new orders to be added or d/c'd. But for the month I've worked there, I still can't get all my meds out before 1200. I've only taken a lunch break four times in the three weeks I've been on my own medical. I'm stressing out cuz I'm worried about not giving meds on time, and we all know the stress on an empty stomach is a no-no. I've learned some tips from nurses who've worked in my hall on how to be faster in med pass; start with the people nearest the nurses' station. Then start within the back and work your way forward. one of them also told me, which is probably not good. She told me that if they have one little pill in the afternoon, say like a vitamin, it wouldn't hurt to give it with morning meds. So it kinda cuts down my 12 pm meds. But heart meds and things like Plavix and insulin need to stay at their designated times, right? I have six Accu-Chek PPL and two who need insulin at specific times. Maybe I should remember what time breakfast and lunch are served so I can know where to put my insulins. Sorry, this is long, and IDK how you can help me if you're not where I work, but if you have any tips, that'd be great. I just wish they'd let me stay on the floor after shift change so I can learn my resident's meds. During med pass, that's the only thing on my mind: pass meds, pass meds, pass meds. I have learned from repetition but not from memory yet. I know it takes time, but I wanna get my routine down now. There are not enough hours in a day, LOL.
  11. I'm a new nurse!! I passed my RN boards this March and I got a full time job at a nursing home. Last friday was my first day of orientation. I wanted to get back into my workout schedule in the months I wasn't working (which i did). I usually run 3mi/day but now that im working, i feel that running prob isn't good for my feet/legs because they're already tired from my shift today. When I came home, I rested for about 45min before i ran. Is running a good or bad workout to do as a nurse who is on her feet 98% of the time? Do you know of any good workouts? Now that I think about it I guess upper body, resistance training would be good, prob crunches, planks, pull-ups/push-ups. things that keep me on my feet only for a bit.. But if y'all have any other tips im open to it! thanks
  12. Btw @mrabbz is my boo aka boyfriend. So yay him!! (:
  13. He took his RN Boards this morning. 200+Q and he ran out of time. He was so down and confused. My poor baby. But he did the PVT while I was on the phone and he's like "what's this? It says our records indicate you have already registered.." I WAS SCREAMINGGG!! he's like what? What's wrong?! I said YOU PASSED!! that's the good pop up!! He. Is. Freaking. Out. As I'm typing hahaha! I'm so happy for him!! If only I could fly to CA but maybe when I get my first paycheck I will. Lol. Yay!! We're both RNs. I passed last week and he passed this week. Oh me gee. This is awesome (:
  14. I took a review class where we review anatomy&physiology. all the diseases we came across in each system, we looked up the treatment. and i learned meds that way: by the systems. another way i learned meds was through doing questions. EVERY time i came across a med, i looked it up. even if i got the question right. cuz sometimes i guessed right on a question with a med i didn't know or remember. i have an iphone, and i have an app called "flashcardlet." i had flashcards that dealt with therapeutic drug monitoring, the normal and abnormals. so i learned that way as well. on test day, i had 4 meds i didn't know. one i knew, but the bit of information i memorized with that med wasn't in my answer choices. it will happen. you just gotta do your best process of elimination. one question tho, the pt had elevated ST segments on their ekg and it asked what med would I give this pt? that was probably the only time i could remember i definitely knew which med to give. when you find a good way to help you remember, stick to it!
  15. sign in to your Pearsonvue account. act like you're registering for the exam. enter in all the info. right after you specify which state boards you're taking, click NEXT and one of two things will happen: the GOOD POP UP or the credit card page. the good pop up will say, "our records indicate you have already registered..." this means you passed. if you're taking directly to the credit card page, you probably failed and will have to wait about 48hrs for your official results. everyone here is saying the PVT is rarely wrong, tho some have had mixed signals. My bestie did the pvt the first time and it took her to the credit card page. she cried cuz she thought she failed. she did the PVT again later in the evening and the good pop up came up. her official results said she passed. but for the most part, the pvt works. good luck! PS the thing about having the 265Q test is that the last question has to be above the passing standard, regardless if your answer was wrong or right. if it's below, you failed. the scary part is, you don't know where you are in relation to the passing standard by the time you reach 265.
