How important is being physically fit in Nursing?

Hello to all :)

I'm currently in 11th grade high school and I made up my mind in taking Nursing as my major and will study in Kwantlen university in the future. Just wondering how important is being fit in Nursing? I'm not athletic at all and quite overweight, and I always had a hard time in P.E. classes. I'm actually glad that they don't mandate P.E. anymore until 11th grade. Is physical education mandatory in Nursing? I'm a male btw.

I am not overweight, but my upper body and arms are really weak and I have a very hard time lifting patients. I have decided that I need to start weightlifting so I can handle patients more safely...for them and for me! So I have started strength training and you can find me in the gym doing shoulder presses with a 5 pound weight in each hand...seriously. :p

If you're not going to lose weight, you at least need to get to a point where you can be on your feet for 12 hours without a lot of sitting down and relaxing. I'm a fat girl, and I can tell you that I am VERY thankful for the fact that my previous career had me running around on my feet 12-16 hours a day. (This is what we can look forward to as floor nurses.)

That little tidbit of advice would actually be good for EVERYONE, no matter how "fit" you are. (I say that because even the girl in my class with a couple NCAA Championships under her belt has a hard time after 10 hours...)

I'm just a student and obese. I am trying to eat healthier and have cut out all drinkable cals, drinking unsweetened ice tea and coke zero;) I also have made a bit better choices, if I eat out I order a BK veggie burger or a grilled wrap. I have stopped the nightly binge eating,no more t.v snacks and leave my fav treats for when I go to the drive in. I say no to ice-cream and junk that I don't truly want to eat. Small changes have made a huge difference , hopefully my scrubs will still fit in Sept as they costed me a ton of money;)

Better to get a handle on your health practices now while you are young and it is easier to establish good habits, than to wait until the overweight situation takes its toll on your overall health. In 15 or 20 years you don't want to be wishing you had done something about this back when it was only an annoyance rather than a full blown problem. Best wishes.

Nobody likes a fat nurse.

We all took Nutrition class.

Avoid simple carbs and try to exercise for an hour every day.

Hi Everyone!

I have been thinking to study nursing and I decided to study about nursing and wanted to become a nurse.

But, i had an accident last year and I broke my arm. The recovery on my broken arm wasn't that good and it turned out i have a dislocation on my broken arm that caused me only can bend my arm 90 degrees. I consulted a lot of doctors and they said it will be very hard to operate my arm and it is so complicated and they can't guarantee that my arm will turn back to normal. if i go for the operation, the risk will be very high and it might become worse than my condition right now. But so far, I could do a lot of physical activities, the only thing that I couldn't do is lift stuffs that are too heavy.

i did some research on the internet about how to become a nurse etc, and it said nurses need to be physically fit but i have this condition on my arm. could I still become a nurse with this condition?
