How should I pursue my degree?

Hello Everyone,

I am new here and i have enjoyed and learned so much by reading many questions and answers in this website. Now it is time for me to ask my question because i could never find an answer to what i am seeking.

I am a working mother of 5 kids, three are in school and two are not. I am 32 years old and after that long pause i now want to start what i left off years ago. Since i have two children at home I am trying to find a way that i can complete my degree online or at least a hybrid degree.

I was told by a friend to get an Associates in Applied Science online and then i would be able to apply to a BSN Program with that degree and complete all my clinical hours. After the BSN program i will be able to take the NCLEX-RN Exam. Is that accurate? Has anyone done this before? If not what do you think I should do and how?

For now i am in an online college (ESC) and I am taking courses that i know will be the prerequisites (HUMAN BIOLOGY, COLLEGE WRITING AND ALGEBRA). Although i want to know how to go through with my next semester. I can go to a campus but it would be extremely hard with my 5 kids. So online would be better choice for me. Thanks in advance for any help you give! :)

Tough to say. It sounds like you want to stay home mostly, but, you're going to be doing 8-12 hour shifts even as a nursing student. Online schools run the risk of YOU, the STUDENT, having to find a preceptor which is often difficult to do. Definitely do your research and see if it's even feasible with what your goals are.

Thanks alot Kuriin for your reply. My meaning of online was meant as a Hybrid College. I know i have to put some time for long shifts and heavy studying. I am still searching for the right college that can help me in getting my education as a nursing student and can provide me a Hybrid education. The colleges that i have contacted here informed me that their hours for nursing is from 8am - 3pm and from Monday till Friday also i have to commit to one day every two weeks to go for the Clinicals which will be for 12 hours. For that reason for me and the situation i am in, i cant commit to that much time in school and was hoping their is a school that can let me commit dome of it at home.

Again thanks a lot for your post!

I don't have kids so this doesn't apply to me however; the fact you're a working mother and have 5 kids. Do you have any family members, close friends that can watch the two kids that aren't in school? Because Nursing School requires a great deal of time commitment. The fact you're aware of the time commitment needed for nursing school shows that are you serious about pursuing Nursing as a career. With continued research I hope you find a feasible option and if not, I suggest waiting a bit until your other children are school-age and/or find a reasonable source of daycare because it will tough.

I read you're going to an online college. Before you commit to taking your sciences online I would contact any & all schools you might be considering & ask them if they accept online sciences. It would suck to take your sciences, do well but have to retake them because the school you apply to doesn't accept them.

My community college has an ADN program that offers an "online" option so lectures are all online and you don't have to campus; they're recorded instead and you can listen to them at your convenience. You have to be an independent, motivated learner for this to work well; I've enjoyed it since I tend to snooze through lectures in person. The only time I had to be on campus was to take a test. You still have to account for clinical hours, but it makes arranging childcare/work schedules much easier. Maybe something like that would work for you?
