Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Updated:   Published

hi guys. After years of thinking and waiting, I finally make up my mind I will start my pre -requisites this coming semester. I will take english, math, biology and sociology. I dont work but i have a preschooler at home with me after her school. I have been reading math and bio books , it isnot easy for me . I am thinking if i should drop sociology this semester. I never went to college before . my english writing is very bad !! I took some bio before so i know what bio class like but what is sociology course like ? is it very hard ? dose it need lots of essay writing ? i watched the SOC lecture on youtube . I found it so boring , if i was in the classroom listening i will be dozing off ..lol....if i take soc. i will take it online.

if you have taken this course before. please give me some idea and tips to get through it. Thank you.

I'm taking sociology this semester as an online class. We have had to do 5 discussion essays and a final paper. I have found the material to be pretty straight forward. It is a requirement for my program so I have no choice in taking it. I've had harder classes.

Sociology was a breeze for me. Since it isn't considered a "hard science" and deals with culture, people, and behaviors there's no hard concepts involved. Although it was easy, it was very boring. Taking it online would probably be easier, you can just google everything.

Gardenfan, the "difficulty" of the sociology course isn't the only thing you should consider here. You also need to consider that

  • You're going back to school (to college this time) for the first time in many years. This will take some adjustment.
  • I don't know if English is your native language, but you say that you have a serious problem ("my english writing is very bad") that could make the learning experience more challenging.
  • You're taking three other courses BESIDES Sociology. The courses are very different from each other, which can create confusion for some students who have been away from school for a long time. In addition, the Biology will probably move along at a faster pace, and include more complex class material than you've experienced before. (by the way, if this a General Biology course?)
  • You are taking these courses so that you can eventually gain admission into a nursing program. To be able to compete with the hundreds of other applicants, you will have to earn good grades (especially if you are trying for a BSN nursing program). It's a lot better to take 2 or 3 courses and get As & Bs, than to take 4 courses and get Cs & Ds, or even Fs
  • You don't just want to "get through" these classes, you want to really understand the material. You will need the information that you are taught in General Biology to be able to understand what they are trying to teach you in Anatomy, Physiology, and Microbiology, and also in your nursing courses.

So considering that this is your first time at college, and also your first time back to a classroom, I'd delay taking Sociology for another term, or two. If you take the English, Math, and Biology, that will be plenty to get you started, and give you a challenge while taking care of a pre-schooler.

A word of advice: have the college counselor set you up with a course of prerequisite studies based on the nursing program you want to apply to, and then have that curriculum checked by a counselor in the nursing program also. Do this at the start of each term, and for any change you make with any course. It can be very easy to either miss taking a prerequisite course, or to take the wrong one (wasting a lot of time and money for you). Communication is very important.

If you're confused, ask questions! If you fall behind, get help. Don't wait until you're too deep in trouble, either with "juggling" your class demands, or with understanding the material. Most schools will have people on staff who can help you not only with academic issues, but also with organizing yourself. Take advantage of it.

Congratulations on taking this important first step into your future. Best wishes for your success!

Sociology usually does involve writing...but basic sociology classes are pretty easy, in my experience. I actually love sociology (especially social psychology), and even majored in it, lol. I know a lot of people find it boring, but I find it fascinating! Anyway, maybe holding off on it until after you take your English class is a good idea, since it sounds like getting some writing practice first might help you out. Good luck!

Out of the classes you listed sociology to me is the easiest. If you think you're taking on more than you can handle, I would drop any class on that list but sociology.

I am currently in an online Sociology course and its not difficult at all. I am in the DCCCD colleges. We have a series of test and discussion boards about your idea and understandings of the text reading. Not hard at all!

Just a question: do you need this class as a specific pre-req or to complete your core? I took Micro and Macroeconomics instead and they counted at the university where I'll apply for nursing school. They are already on my transcripts there.

I can understand how Sociology can be harder to deal with, especially for ESOL students. (Don't know if it's the OP's case).

I took intro to soc from Rio Salado / Maricopa, online. It's not a lot of work, and there are 8 week and 12 week options, offered frequently. There's a special "condensed version" textbook for it that you have to buy through their bookstore. I might sell mine on ebay if I get around to it. Overall, it was a pretty easy class with not a lot of reading or writing required, but it did start out easy and the last 3 weeks of it were more demanding. But usually I could get each week's assignment completed on a Saturday or Sunday, start to finish, reading, quiz, whatever.

Sociology is interesting, and not particularly difficult. But it you just want to get 'er done as a prereq for RN school, that online course might suffice for you.

Sociology depends on how the professor wants to teach the class, in my case i just finished the class this week (online class) it was very frustrating sometimes we had 2 essays, 8 discussions, and 4 tests ( 4 chapters each test,50 questions in 75 minutes.) recommendation my friend read every single detail, every single data, my professor very nice guy but very into the tricky questions.. after the first test almost half of the class dropped the course... i fought for it until the end and i got B ... i asked my professor for the 2 points that i needed and he was willing to help me but i was honest i did very bad in a test and that sent me to finish with an B.. so i am happy :) but read everything !!! good luck

In my own opinion sociology is not that hard, its just boring. Unless the professor is interesting an makes the course intresting. In my case about, few years ago, it was boring!!!...and my professor made it that way! However he was trying and my classmates kinda made it a little interesting. In the end I came out with a B but just brace yourself and drink something with caffine to keep you awake in class...lol but hopefull you have a better experence than I and dont doubt you can do it because I believe it's not that hard :-) good luck
