How hard is Microbiology?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I'm debating taking Mirco during the summer. It will be 4x's a week, 4 hours a day for 6 weeks. I only work on Sundays but I do have a 14 month old :redbeathe. I have a strong A&P background (massage therapist) but I've been out of school for awhile.

Thanks!!

In comparision to AP I and AP II, Micro has been easier. I think it has to do with the professor. My micro professor is really good, she explains stuff so the students can understand it. We only have 2 lecture tests the entire semester and the final. We have 2 lab exams and lab quizzes and lecture quizzes. We have a couple unknowns in lab and a group project. I tried taking AP II during the summer and had to drop because it was just so much information and sitting in class for 4 hours a day 4 days a week was too much for me.

If I had to choose a prereq science class to take during summer, I would choose micro.

Good luck to you :)

This Tuesday I will be taking my LAST exam in my microbiology class (I have an A going into it). Overall, it was an interesting and fun course!! I had a great professor who is the director of the Microbiology department at a major medical center in the area. He always added humor to lectures, whenever possible, to make the class more enjoyable. There is A LOT of material to cover, which I think makes this class more challenging, particularly if you are taking a quarter class. But if you study everyday and stay on top of the material you will do great! Good luck!! :)

Micro is by far the easiest of the pre-reqs at our school. Many have suggested to take it over the summer. Because Anatomy and Physio were so time intensive I was too afraid to try it (even though I am a really good student). However, I wish I had done it. I rarely have to spend hours upon hours of study time like I did for the others. Physio was hard bc the concepts of how action potentials work etc can be hard to understand then on top of it you have to memorize/learn the material. Anatomy is hard only because there is so much to learn in such little time. Micro is easy material (esp if you have the others) and just requires the repitition of learning it and there isn't as much as anatomy. So , if you are a good student, with good study habits, go for it and get it over with!

I haven't taken it yet, don't plan on taking it until I'm doing nursing 3, but I've heard it's really hard. I would much rather take it during the regular semester instead of cramming such a hard class into the summer. But good luck with whatever you decide!

I'm also going to be taking micro over the summer(I think mine are just 4 weeks long????Hmmm, have to recheck that!), followed by A&P 1, the next summer session. So maybe we should form a little online study group? :yeah:

Is it strange that the school I attend does not require A&P at all prior to taking Micro? The only pre-req for Micro was BIO 101. Another local community college requires A&P I and II prior to taking Micro.

Perhaps that is why I am struggling so much with Micro?

Micro is fun. It was one of my favorite classes of all time, next to chemistry.

I'm taking a 10-week Microbiology course this summer. I hope I enjoy it!

I find it fascinating how different everyone is! Micro is my last nursing pre-req and I am struggling to hold on to a "B". Up until this point, I have had a 4.0. For me, micro is the most difficult class I have taken. Honestly, I do think it has so much to do with the instructor.

Is it true that an L.C.C.C. student can only take Micro once they are an established Nursing Student?

This is what I'm worrying as well. I'm taking microbio along with Anatomy. I don't have any other choice, I have to take it with either Anatomy or Physiology. So will the class be harder for someone who has no background in A&P? I had to take general bio so we touched on bacteria, fungi, viruses. how they reproduce and things such as that.

This depends totally on the type of instructor that you have. I took it in the summer for 4 weeks M-Fri and loved it. I had a super instructor that went the extra mile she was a microbiologist working on the Herpes virus so you can imagine the brain power. We had a test every Friday but she would review every Thursday. I passed with a A and believe me this was not my first atempt at taking this class.
