How hard are the math requirements?

Nursing Students General Students

Hi, My name is Crissy I have just transferred to a university from a community college I got my A.S. in paralegal studies so I have no experience with much Math or Science, I took Bio and really enjoyed it but I absolutly hate math I dont know what to major in I am afraid I will not pass the nursing program if there is alot of math. I am wondering if anyone can tell me how bad the math really is... Thanks, Crissy

If you can do math at a seventh grade level (fractions, decimals, percentages, and minimal pre-algebra) then you should be able to pass the NET. If you need to brush up on these skills, find someone who knows how to perform these operations.

Good luck to you. I struggle with math, too.

While this is true for the net, pharmacology is a different story once you get into the program. A lot of demensional analysis which can be hard for some without a solid math background. Plus you will probably have to have College Algebra to graduate and you will use math in Chem/Physics if these are required...(chem usually is) If you feel weak, take a remedial math course and like theCommuter said, pair up with another student who is strong in math

Thanks for the advice I will definitly do that. Love Crissy

This may be currently true, but things are changing; at least here in California. Starting with 2007 applications students must have intermediate algebra (currently only elementary algebra is needed) They did a study and found that it takes more than just basic math skills, I think you said "seventh grade level...pre-algebra", to successfully pass a nursing program (mostly because of the pharmacology). And this is at the ASN level at a JC. The BSN program (no I am not trying to start a ASN BSN debate here) requires Statistics, more advanced chemistry and of course the courses required to simply transfer to a University (which I would hope you already have being that you have an A.S. degree already and are transferring to a university...)

I'm in BSN school. I took the easiest level of Math offered, and statistics. Never even taken college algebra. I don't consider statistics math.

The only thing people have trouble with are medication calculation problems. I still don't get why. All you have to do is add, subtract, multiply, and divide.

Even if you have to take college algebra or higher...you can do it. Many degrees require that anyway.

Nursing isn't heavy on math. I thought the hardest requirements were the microbiology and chemistries. But, they're still doable.

I agree. You couldn't pay me to do micro over again!:specs:

Statistics is required for a BSN but not for ASN. The math required to be a nurse is really basic stuff. It will be one of the first tests you take in school. You will get a couple of chances to pass it or get kicked out of the program. Don't worry, it is really easy!

I took a three year Microbiology technologist program a few years back. Luckily I won't have too much trouble with the micro. It's interesting stuff, so as long as you like it, it shouldn't be too hard :)

I LOVED my micro class. If a microbiology degree did not require so much chemistry I would change my major to micro

I'm in an ADN program - we have to have intermediate algebra AND probabilities/statistics to graduate. Thank goodness I find math fairly easy

I am in a BSN program too. Today I made the decision to do nursing. I am excited. I looked into the math I only need statistics and college algebra.
