How to handle back to back admissions within 1 hours of each other while having 4 other pt

Hi, I work night shift and we have six patients per night. I had 4 patients (one was an admission earlier on day shift that came in an hour before shift change.) And then I was told I was getting two admissions. And they were within 2 hours of each other. The admission that came in earlier on day shift was having shooting stabbing chest pain with other issues. I just want to know how would you all handle this situation? You already have 4 patients, and then back to back admissions? As a new grad I just really would like to see how you all would handle this situation (time management). It felt like I had 3 admissions. Because day shift really didnt know anything about the pt they handed off.

This is a medsurg floor in an acute care hospital btw.

within one hour? try with 5 minutes of each other? my employer doesnt care. send em up anyway.

After all its my license if I flub up due to not being able to be 6 people at the same time, Not theirs.

Yup, when I was still at the bedside, shift change at 3 pm, trying to get report, 2 roll in, and a third chomping at the bit for his discharge paperwork.

Prioritization is key! ABCs and Mazlows. Keep them alive and keep them safe.

I greet the new admissions to make them comfortable and, if family is lingering, I quickly tell everyone what to expect. Then I resume my medication pass and assessments for the patients who have already been there.

Once medication pass and assessments have been done on the more established patients, I finish up the admissions.

Unless something dire is happening with any of the newly admitted patients, keep in mind that you do not need to drop what you were doing to finish the admit right then and there. Good luck to you.

Well I had 35 patents last night a got two back to back admissions - Plus 3 wanderers whose private sitters who did not show up. My LVN took over passing all the meds, my floor staff ran herd on the walkers and I did the admits both of which had like a million meds to enter :banghead:

What I didn't get done I handed off to the next shift.

Hppy

Prioritize. Ask for help if you need it. Also review anything you can In Advance and anticipate equipment that need to be in the room when they get there. Circle past the other patients and check in for a two second round just to be sure nobody falls or goes missing etc. sometimes I feel I am just getting them into a bed And pass along some of the tasks I did not get to.

Ok great to know!!! I was in the middle of a med pass plus pt was having the stabbing pain. I guess its part of the waiting everyone complains about in the hospital
