How was your first week in nursing school?

Published

I have noticed that some have started nursing school. How was your first week? let's share our experiences. Regarding supplies etc. what did you forget, that you wish you hadn't. :) I start in September....I will let you know.

Best wishes to all, class of 2007(ADN) and 2008/9(BSN)

Specializes in cardiac/education.

Oh man Nurse Bunky! I feel for you!! Sounds like a nightmare! But you got through it!! Doesn't it make you wonder when your body won't be able to take that kind of stress anymore?? LOL. That is what I think come skills check off time. I wonder if I can take two years of the "fight or flight" feeling....:rotfl: Good Luck on your second year!!:)

Awwwwffffffuuuuullllll!!! We started school Monday (15th of Aug) and had orientation all day. The next day we had skills check off on Sq, IM, IV piggyback, NG tube and Physical Assessment. I screwed up horribly on the injection station. I had to draw up demerol and phenergan in the same tube. I was so nervous and the professor checking me off made me even more nervous. She kept asking me questions that took me awhile to answer and we only had 50min to complete all 5 stations. She was really mean and kept looking at me like I was stupid. I ended up having to redo that area.

Then in lecture I couldnt stay focused b/c of the awful job I did no checkoff. I started thinking that I wasnt suppose to be a nurse and that I should just get up and leave class now. (This is my second and last year of nursing school.) I only hope that this week is better.

Um, since I started school over a month ago I have felt virtually every emotion and been through all the stages of grief/denial/shock. Like this:

:stone :uhoh21:   :banghead: :barf01: :selfbonk: :crying2:

Right now, I am back to this: :uhoh21: + :barf02:

And so is the roller coaster ride I guess.

Great Post!!! :rotfl: I just cant quit giggel :chuckle ing

just decided to bump this up for those starting next week :)

Ha-ha-ha. :D

I just have to say that is the funniest thing I have seen. I think that sums up a nursing student!

That was good

I know how you feel. I started Thursday and have a lab test on vital signs on Tuesday, followed by the lab on vital signs. My reaction was panic, then denial, now I am just reading a chapter at a time, an assessment at a time, and a prayer every couple of hours. I have NO experience in med profession except being a pharm. tech 15 years ago! It seems like everyone in my class are CNA's or LPN's. They are like "Vital Signs, no prob, I have to make an occupied bed, sweet...." and I am trying not to hyperventilate before lunch!

I'll get through it. If it doesn't kill me it can only make me stronger. My solace lies in the fact that I had the professor from hell for A&P 2 and Micorbiology (same Prof, and I took them together) and I survived that. To quote a poster in another forum here....."Bring it on!" lol

Rochelleus,

I can totally sympathize with you. I have no healthcare experience either, other than back office, and I am absolutely nerveracked!! (See my descriptive post above, LOL). I am the same, freaking about even vital signs!! I don't even think I know for sure how to do BP! We did all that in our CNA classes though and are expected to already be proficient at that! So............I'll be cramming before clinical. Anyway, Good Luck to you, it is starting to get somewhat easier for me, I am getting my groove, but I am still trying not to "hyperventilate before lunch".:clown:

We had a med calc test a week before classes started (the week of finals for my last pre-req.s). First week 16 chapters to read. My first ten minutes, "Let's jump in, this is how you insert a folley catheter." Then we all had to demonstrate what was shown. Went in with a 4.0, was the curve setter in all my pre-req.s and found out half the students in my class did the same thing. My 4.0 is not going to be there next term (I'll make at least one B). Hope I didn't scare anyone too bad. It is overwhelming, then it get's manageable. The students quickly try to bolster each other up. And clinical is a fantastic experience. Everyone is afraid and after the first day you say, I really felt like a nurse. Good Luck to all.

Oh my week has not been so good. I just feel really lost! All the girls in my LPN class are CNA's but 4 of us. They know how to do all the things we are doing and I just keep feeling like a dodo head. :imbar I am trying to read and study well but I am having trouble with the critical thinking part. :uhoh21: You have these questions and all of the answers could be correct. I think I will fell better once I take the 1st test and see how they will be. Is this just first week jitters?

lol, first of all the giant lady parts i have seen that video,, lol peri care is your friend (instructors comment)

Ok so for the first week it wasnt so bad not near as bad as some of the posts i read. we did finish the first book Fundamental of Nursing in 2 weeks test after test after test then the final. YES they threw us in it head first. first final 2 weeks into the program the first KICKOUT point whew made it thru ok with a 91.7 average hehe,, a B at my school.

3rd week in class we went to skills which we are still working on about halfway thru the book, chapter, test, chapter, test, test every day... oh and POP quiz,,, thank goodness those are only daily grades and all get added together to get counted as a test grade for KICKOUT purposes, in skills I have a 98.2 average a breeze for me cause we actually do something besides watch movies (such as the giant lady parts) and read oh yeah and the Informational Inventory AKA POP Quizzes arent so bad just love my instructors word for it it would BEHOOVE you to read the chapter tonight. hehe only made the mistake of not reading it 1 time lol

and now for A & P

THIS IS KICKING MY REAR,,,,, cells, mitosis, electrolytes,, DNA RNA just a few of the million things I dream about on a nightly basis.

average in there right now is a 83.2 I think the class average is a 86

I have been in school since july 13, and have been thru 8 1 subject notebooks just with notes,,, invest in paper goods,

mechanical pencils are a life saver always sharp

3 ring binders I have 8 of them and a ROLLING backpack would probably be one of the best investments.

just to mention,

in LPN program thru local technology school, class of 26 only allowed to have 24 so we lose 2 on September 2, the alternates or anyone not passing thank god im not an alternate. Mother to 3, raising 5 munchkins tho, ages 10/10/8/7/5 fostering 2 and hubby an OTR driver. all in all this past 6 weeks of classes have been the most wonderfully exhausting fullfilling exciting scary moments of my life

thanks if ya made it this far i know it is a little rambling but hey im a nursing student lol

oh yea

another saying my instructor has

WHAT IS A NURSING STUDENT WHO GRADUATES WITH A 77 AVERAGE?
